BMW 635CSI 3 Transmission requires attention The most complex unit of a car is the transmission. It has more than 300 parts, ail of which have to work properly at one time to keep a car run ning better and safer. But age or mistreat ment takes its toll on the transmission. " C h e c k i n g t h e transmission fluid r e g u l a r l y i s n o t enough," said Gerald J. Aleksy, president of •V -V; . Brakes the Chicagoland and Northwestern Indiana AAMCO dealers. "A check-up, either an nually or every 15,000 miles, is a necessity. The quicker you catch a transmission pro blem, the less damage there will be." There are several t e l l t a l e ^ s i g n s o f transmission trouble, according to Aleksy, who has been an AAM CO dealer for 17 years. They Include: An unfamiliar sound in the transmission; delay before engaging in any gear; car sounds like it's going, but doesn't respond; transmission slips, chatters or vibrates; transmission fluid low when checked. A yes to any of these symptoms signals the need for a check-up "fast -- before things get worse -- and more expensive," stated Aleksy. In ac cordance with AAMCO policy, he performs services only when necessary and always with the skill of a train ed professional, said Aleksy. Any parts put into the car will be new or in excellent condi tion. Aleksy notes that no AAMCO transmission dealer gives a price over the phone. In stead, the car must be brought into an AAM CO service outlet ( t h e r e a r e 3 1 i n Chicago and Nor t h w e s t e r n I n d i a n a ) ;-up of the car will be made. If transmission work i* n e e d e d , b u t a customer says no to the work, there will be a small charge only if the transmission is removed. X Alesky notes that a car today may need major transmission work after 40,000 miles. If the anti-lock system should fail, an amber "Anti-Lock" in dicator will illuminate. The driver will still have normal braking available, but without the anti-lock feature. In a "worst-case" situation, such as total electrical failure, 10 to 20 stops still are possi ble with the pressure remaining in the ac cumulator. Even when this pressure is ex hausted, the driver still can bring the car to a stop by braking normally, but with in- •( Continued from Page 3C) creased pedal effort. "ABS is a truly in n o v a t i v e p i e c e o f technology," Sharpe said.
