"Who needs a bureaucratic, big city bank? Libertyville Federal processed my mortgage loan quickly and efficiently. I t ' r I i M u r p h y , Kim I I slaf «• Hi oki't Antique plane (Continued from p*f« IB) the complete original. In three years, I'd say half my plane went out to California in other planes, UPS, and Federal Express," Tom recalled. Carrier would duplicate parts he needed, and make copies for use in ^ Tom's plane. "So it worked out mutually well for both of us," Tom said. Only 29 Stearman C3R planes were built. Tom's was the next-to-last to roll out of the Stearman Aircraft factory on Jan. 8, 1981. Robinson's immediately preceded it. The Wright R-760E, 240-horsepower engine is only the second one ever installed in the plane. It was installed in 1933, and has been there ever since. Problems were few and far between during the restoration. "The biggest was duplication of the interior paint scheme. It was a two- tone, crackle-paint system. It took me years to find someone who could make the paint the way it was in the original design," Tom said. Nancy pulled out a photo album, one of several filled with pictures of the plane, and singled out a picture of the cockpit's interior with its intricate paint design. The other problem arose just before the Lowes were ready to fly to Blakesburg, Iowa, for the Antique Airplane Association's National Fly In t at Antique Airfield last month. Hie petcock valves in the fuel system were leaking. Tom changed them . three times and couldn't solve the predicament. "It was a severe problem, since the valves were in the cockpit," he said. "So, we fell back on Garth. He had the same problems and solved it by putting modern petcock valves in and modifying the fuel system to take them. We sent them out to Los Angeles on a Wednesday. I had already * bought the valves; he modified them for me and sent it on Federal VExpress the next day and we had them by Saturday. They were installed * and the following Sunday we flew the plane the first time. So we say C 'Hello, Federal,'" Tom said. * Tom, Nancy and Mike flew to Blakesburg, Iowa, near Ottumwa for the - Antique Airplane Association's National Fly In on Aug. 11. The flight took about two hours each way. < The plane has a cruising speed of 110 mph, and a landing speed of 42 »mph. The service celling is 16,000 feet. The plane carries 66 gallons of fuel ^and burn* 12 to 13 an hour, so it has a flight endurance of about 5 to 5Vfe -hours. ;• The Lowei flew home with five awards: AAA Best in Class, Aircraft v Owners and Pilot Association's Choice, Southern Insurance Group Choice, 1 Antique Club of Greatsr New York Choice, and AAA Grand Champion. 1 "It's slwsys nice to win something, but our goal was not to win. We * Wert looktnf' restore it and to fly it, but it's nice to receive recognition £ (or our effort # im said. ; He reotnUy .* ited from the National Steerman Fly In at Galesburg. * In October, Toti* plans to compete in the Regional at Jennings, La., if the * weather holds up, The family's next job will be restoring their other antique plane, a 1942 Stearman N2S-3. It was built in 1936 and used as a U.S. Navy training airplane during World War II. "Maybe we'll start working on that in the spring," Tom said. "I try to get out and fly them once a month in the winter, although the cold severely puts a crimp on things." For the time being, fixing up the house and flying for United top Tom's priority list. He probably won't wear a leather helmet and goggles for the latter. He'll save those for visiting the past in his biplanes. The last thing you need when you're ready to purchase a home is to have a financial in stitution misplace your application in an endless stack of papers. "The application for my condominium loan was handled with great care. Wayne Auge', a loan of ficer at Libertyville Federal, was courteous and efficient. The paperwork was expedited through the proper channels. My loan was approved promptly. That kind of service is rare. You probably won't find it at a big city bank."
