Grant tips Johnsburg : By Ptainttettor sports staff I FOX LAKE -- Johnsburg's cross -country team tried to make the best - out of a tough situation Thursday : afternoon, and the Skyhawks may -have done just that. Johnsburg was without the ser- I vices of No. 1 runner Mark Wid- -jialm, who was ineligible, and the -Skyhawks lost to Grant, 19-39. : But a pair of JHS runners made •their presence felt in Widhalm's ab sence, and picked up some of the • slack. «; "We really had some bright spots, Itwo in particular," said JHS coach -Bob Texidor. •; One of those spots was freshman : Matt Hennigan, who slid into the top spot for Texidor's squad, finishing '.fourth overall with a time of 18:04 in : the three mile race. "Matt did a super job for us to- Tday," said Texidor. "He ran a very • strong race." *• Sophomore Ed Nichols finished fifth in 18:25. *; "Ed was really psyched up for this I race, in fact he was leading for quite •a long time. But I think he wnet out l^oo fast, and he dropped back after a ; while," Texidor said. •; Senior Bill Meyer was the next I JHS finisher, coming across in ;l9:14. Sophomore Tom Valiant took 10th in 19:18, while junior John Her Mndez was 11th (19:23), sophomore Craig Zvonar 12th (19:39), junior Brian Berndt 13th (19:59), senior Opie Taylor 14th (20:10) and junior Brett Bartkoske 15th, in 20:49. "We had a real nice pack in there," said Texidor. "We had the 9th through 15th placeSi If we can have moved that up a few places that will be great." The Skyhawks are 3-2 overall, 1-1 i n t h e N o r t h w e s t S u b u r b a n Conference. The Johnsburg girls, running with their always-present impediment of a three-person squad, again forfeit ed. But the continued improvement of the trio pleased Texidor Thursday. "They're running better and bet ter all the time," Texidor said. "If we had had a full team, we would have won today, I beleive." Freshman Jenny Baehne was sec ond in the two-mile race, finishing in 13:28. Sophomore Lisa Nunamaker wqs fourth in 13:48, while sopho more Tammy Policky took fifth, 14:20. Joe Wharton was the only JHS participant in the frosh-soph race, finishing loth in 15:41. the Skyhawks will continue NWSC action next Thursday at Lake Zurich. On the Sideline Dick Rabbltt The question is: Will MCHS bounce back? Will the Warriors bounce back? That's the question going around McHenry High and the community this week. There's no doubtthat there had to be a lot of communication this week among the coaching staff and players. After the 41-0 loss last Saturday * at the hands of Crystal Lake South, a lot of soul-searching had to take place. J No one individual or coach can take the blame for the defeat. It was a ; matter that the better team won last Saturday. The Warriors, to a point, > stopped the Gator option play that had been successful in their first two 2 games. But Kevin Beck, the fine Gator field general, went to the - airlanes for three touchdowns, two of those in the opening period, that left the warriors playing catdnip, a rottthat didn't agree with them * Saturday. 11 - < Once again, the Warrior offense sputtered when in scoring territory. * Twice the Warriors got deep into Gator land, but twice they were set £ back with nary a point. As in the previous two games, the Warriors can «march from the 20-yard line to the opponents' 20, but then they bog * down. Either a penalty, a missed block, a bad pass or just bad luck hits * the Warriors at the wrong time. 1 Friday, the Central Tigers of Bill Mack are at McCracken Field. We •*hope the Warriors can shake off last week's defeat, and that they do indeed BOUNCE BACK for a victory. Gary Gray's girls' tennis team are 5-1 on the season prior to I Thursday's match against Round Lake. The Warrior netters suffered > their first loss to Woodstock Wednesday. The veteran coach has a well- * rounded squad, and they are improving with each match. Maybe this is their year to grab the Fox Valley title. The volleyball squad is finding the going tough in the Fox Valley. The * girls lost on Tuesday to Jacobs, 15-8 and 15-7. The foundation is now laid, * with the addition of the freshmen squad this season. It takes time to < build, however. < Attended my first soccer game ever on Wednesday, when the War- < riors hosted Lake Zurich. One had better be in top shape, as there is a lot ;of running. It seemed strange to see boys running after a ball and «kicking it, while I'm used to seeing people walk after a ball and hit it <'with a club. I Mike Shanahan is showing what he can do with depth. His girls' 'swimming team defeated Waukegan East on Tuesday. The popular : coach is smiling with all the girls he has on hand for the various events. -A long way from years gone by for Coach Mike. I This is indeed a strange world. Ken Ludwig, probably as big a Cub * booster as Ernie Banks, broke off a golf engagement with yours truly ' and Bill Day on Tuesday, and journeyed to see the good guys play on the * South Side. Is it possible that SIH has another convert. Heard by the ; grapevine that he was impressed with Harold Baines' home run. At least - he got to see a major league team play. < Well, last week was easy pickings, except Bob Carlson's Dundee- - Crown Chargers upset Jacobs. The other guy and I tied for the week, 6-1 - each. This week, things are a little tougher, a lot of good games on tap, and as usual, we'll stick our necks out once again. ^Rabbitt: (6-1 last week, 19-8 overall) As I said last week, no picking the ;Warriors until they win one, so I'll stick with Bill Mack's Tigers. Woodstock to roll along for win No. 4, over Jacobs. The Gators in a tough ;one over Dundee-Crown. Another dog fight at Woodstock tonight, but I'll pick the 'Canes over the Skyhawks. Riverside-Brookfield again takes on Ian FVC member, and will defeat Cary-Grove, and the Richmond ;; Rockets to trim Genoa-Kingston in another thriller. K < Juzwik: (6-1 last week, 17-10 overall) Though you might not have faith, I ;do. A little. But it's waning. I guess I don't think Central's as good as -everyone else thinks they are. Therefore, the Warriors by something Uike 8-6. Woodstock and CL South have imbedded themselves in my mind ;as the class of the conference. The two R-B's win by 20 or so each. And, ^Johnsburg continues to improve, edging Marian Central by a "touchdown. PRESTON WARD, D.C. One, he wanted to score. Two, he wanted to give goalie Matt Roy a bit of a break in the nets. Three, he wanted to win. How's two out of three? "Two out of three's okay," laughed Sytsma. "We played a pretty good game." The Warriors had been held scoreless since their opener -- six straight games -- but Thurs day saw that streak of futility end, as Junior Ivan Cvitkovic, the only Warrior to score yet this season, put in both Warrior goals in a 5-2 loss to the Tigers. "We got a couple goals, got on the board," Sytsma said. "It was a pretty even game throughout. They put pressure on us, and we were down 1-0 after the first quarter." After the Tigers made it 2-0 in the second period, Cvitkovic in tercepted a pass from a Central defender to the Tiger goalie, and dribbled around the hapless net- minder to put the ball in and get the Warriors a goal. The game remained at 2-1 at the half, but Central scored two quick goals about halfway through the third period, putting the game out of reach at 4-2. With six minutes gone in the fourth, junior co-captain Scott Smith hit Cvitkovic with a nifty pass to cut the gap to 4-2. "That put the pressure on them a little bit/' Sytsma said. "But they scored a fifth goal late, and that was it." Roy made 15 saves, a sharp decline from the 30-35 he had made in the last pair of games. "I'm pretty satisfied,;' Sytsma said. "We didn't win, but it was a much more even game. Roy made about 15 saves, and we had a bigger variety of people shoot ing the ball. It wasn't Just Ivan, it was a lot of people." Sytsma cited the play of Smith, s e n i o r c o - c a p t a i n M a r k McClaughry and Trent Castle. The Warriors, now 1-7 overall, 0-3 in the FVC, will host Wau- conda next Tuesday. In a JV mini-game following the regular contest, the Warriors and Tigers tied, l-l. Freshman Christian Ziebel scored the goal for McHenry. Se nior Jerry Bennett fed the ball to freshman Perry Marke, who looped the ball to Ziebel for the score. Defenseman Chris Gohl helped out with a nice head save, avert ing a CLC goal. Warrior*. from ltt said. "As far as backfield skill peo ple, Curt Justen, Jim Shaver and Dana Pitel are, except for South, some of the best in the conference." Justen and Pitel were rendered helpless by a stingy, >gang-tackling South team Saturday. Shaver led all ballcarriers with 64 hard-earned yards. J "Defense is Central's strongest suit," Schlender said. -"They also execute well on offense. They have some tough backs in Whit Friese, Jeff Aldridge and Joe Adams. They have a typical Central line, strong off the ball. They don't make funda mental errors. "It's not going to be a real match ing of wits or anything." he contin ued. "These are two football teams that will do virtually the same kind of things. It's going to be one of those games won by intangibles. "We have to feel like when we step on the field, we can win. I hope the kids are convinced of that. I think that they are," Schlender said. And, the bottom line for a coach whose team really wants to win? "I look for a pretty exciting foot ball game," said Joe Schlender. (Phil English contributed to this story.)
