Zverlna UPI auto writer DETROIT - Volvo has built quite a reputa tion for making automo biles that have one of the longest ownership records of any car, and it looks like its new 740 series will carry on that tradition. * The 740 GLE and 740 Turbo, covered in this report, are added to the upper end of the Volvo's model line for 1965. The plusher 760 GLE, intro duced in 1963, continues as does the lower end DL series, which evolved from the 140 se ries first started in 1968. Both the 740 and 760 series have a lower, squared-off look and improved aerodynam ics when compared with the DL series. Two new "low friction" engines are offered this year for the 740, both based on Volvo's 2.3-liter four- cylinder engine. The 740 is designed for those not quite ready to lay out 121,485 for the base 760 GLE or $23,060 for the turbo version. The 740 GLE lists at $16,845, exclud ing a $800 audio pack age, and the 740 Turbo costs $19,045 excluding the sound system. Covered in this report is the 740 Turbo station wagon, a mid-year model that was intro duced in Phoenix, Ariz. It marked the first time the Swedish carmaker introduced a model out side its native country. The 740 Turbo wagon closes the price gap be tween the 740 and 760 series with a list price of $21,340. (An automat ic, transmission is of fered in a separate model for $435 more.) All other features such" as air condition ing, four-speed trans mission with electric overdrive, stereo cas sette, leather interior, and power windows, steering and door locks are standard. Also included is a manual sunroof, metal lic paint, and power four-wheel disc brakes. The 740 wagon sports a 160-horsepower 2.3-11- ter turbocharged 4-cyl- inder engine. EPA mile age is rated at 20-city-26 highway with the man ual gearbox; 19-city-23 h ighway wi th the automatic. The 740's leather seats offer excellent support. Although all controls are manual, the front seats may be adjusted to any position desired. But the head res t s a re hard and uncomft table. Even the tallest driv er or passengers will appreciate the generous headroom and legroom front and rear because of the deep floorpan design. The dashboard is a no-nonsense affair, us ing well defined dial gauges. Lacking is an oil pressure gauge, crit- ica l for any turbo engine. The wagon has a 60-40 split rear seat which folds down independent ly to increase cargo space. A locking rear platform stows valu ables in a storage tray Just above the spare, which is mounted inside > and belOW the floor. A handy tool kit is found in a side compart ment, and the rear lift- gate opens up high and out of the way for easy loading. The 740 may be priced out of the range of many buyers. But consider this -- all fea tures that usually make up $3,000 or more in op tions on other cars are already there, as is one of the better warranties and reputations in the business.
