More than 50 doctors are believed to be buried under the rubble. Death toll surpasses 4,000 By Frederick Kiel United Press International MEXICO CITY - The official death toll from Mexico's earth quakes rose to more than 4,000 Tues day but rescue workers found survi vors who-had been buried alive for five days, including another new born baby in a hospital incubator. The government issued a new con firmed death figure of 4,160, but officials expect the toll to go higher. U.S. Ambassador John Gavin esti mated last weekend that up to 10,000 people were killed. Rescue workers continued to search for thousands of people be lieved trapped in the rubble of build ings that collapsed during the two major quakes, the first of which struck Thursday and the second on Friday night. The extent of the devastation was just becoming clear. Insurance companies making a preliminary assessment of the tosses caused by the quakes said 7,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged in Mexico City, according to the respected El Universal newspaper. The newspaper also said an esti mated 1 million people were left unemployed and an estimated 350,000 were temporarily or perma nently without housing. Volunteer rescue workers probing the ruins of the 12-story Hospital Juarez found a newborn baby alive in an incubator. The baby was identified as the son of Ines Cruz Soriano, whose where abouts were unknown. The baby ap peared to have been only one or two days old when the hospital crumbled on top of him, doctors estimated. The incubator apparently saved the child's life. Two infants and a doctor were pulled alive from the same hospital Monday and another baby was res cued Monday from the Gynecologi cal-Obstetrical Hospital in the gov ernment's Medical Center complex. A man and his wife were pulled alive from the rubble of their 13- story apartment building late Mon day night. The apartment complex collapsed with 2,000 people in it. Some 300 have so far been listed as survivors. Despite objections from some vol unteer rescue workers, authorities said they would wind down around- the-clock searches for survivors at some sites. Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez flew to Mexico City Tuesday aboard an Air Force plane carrying 12 tons of medicine for earthquake victims. Authorities said the number of Span iards kilied in the quake nad reached 50 In New York, the 159-nation U.N. General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution calling on all countries to "contribute generous ly" to the relief and reconstruction effort in Mexico. The League of Red Cross Societies in Geneva said 20 Wtta*rn nations have contritwted no«rty<|2.6 million in cash and supplies to the Red Cross for victims of Mexico's earthquakes. In Washington, State Department spokesman Pete Martinez said: "Travel within Mexico by air, rail and highway is unrestricted and buses and the subway system in Mexico City are operating near nor mal. Distribution of water to affect ed areas remains a problem." Mexican authorities estimated 500 people were still buried in the rubble of the Nuevo Leoh high-rise apart ment building in the Tlatelolco sec tion of Mexico City. And at least 100 garment workers were unaccounted for in several factories south of the downtown area. Rescue crews reported they could hear the cries of a man trapped under the rubble at Juarez Hospital, but were not Sure if they could move the tons of rubble in time to save him. A second man pinned under the debris could be pulled out if a medi cal team could crawl in to amputate his leg. But rescuers said it was too dangerous to send in the doctors. Instead, rescue workers used back hoes and small cranes to remove the rubble in a slow process in which hope for survivors trapped since Thursday decreased hourly. < By Marie Cofrln Untied Press International PARIS--Ousted Defense Minister Charles Hernu, who resigned saying senior officers lied to him about their Involvement In the bombing of a Greenpeace sMp In New Zealand, gave • spoken order to "neutralize" the boat, the Le Monde newspaper said Tuesday. * The Defense Ministry, in an ap parent attempt to staunch continued revelations In the press about French involvement In the attack, detained three officers on charges they leaked Information to journal ists, a ministry spokesman said.
