NORTHWEST HERALD Section B Wednesday, September 25.19S5 Pagt 5 Food rHow to avoid heartburn on trips * Travel awav from home -- and effect relatinnshin between A nnlv are rirh and hioh in fat hut svmntoms mav var Travel away from home -- whether on business or for pleasure -- can be an unsettling experience, even under the best of circumstances. It can also be a battleground for prospective heartburnsufferers. Regardless of the reason or the distance involved, travelers typically find themselves thrust into an environmental setting that effects a change in their normal lifestyle or behavior pattern. While there is no clinical evidence to suggest a direct cause jmd effect relationship between a change in environment of lifestyle and the burning discomfort com monly associated with heartburn, medical experts generally agree that the presence of one or both of these factors can amplify the pro blem and increase its incidence of occurrence. Many travelers, for example, have a tendency to consume delec table full-course meals, often right before going to bed. These meals often consist of food and beverage combinations that not only are rich and high in fat, but contain ingredients that can cause a potentially troublesome in crease in acid secretion in the stomach. Then, of course, there is the classic example of the weary business traveler who, for any number of reasons, elects to satisfy his hunger cravings by grabbing a quick bite to eat or drink while on the run. In too many cases, individuals who find themselves in this predicament hardly take the time to consume their food, let alone digest it. In both of these hypothetical situations, the resulting demands placed on the body's digestive system can easily lead to heart burn, a common digestive disorder that is principally caused by the backup of acidic stomach contents into the esphagus (the tube connecting the throat to the stomach). The location of the discomfort -- typically under the breastbone in the chest area -- is how the term "heartburn" came into use. Heartburn may be particularly unpleasant when lying down, which is why most physicians ad vise against eating a heavy meal immediately before going to bed. Depending on the individual and the circumstances involved, these symptoms may vary slightly. "One man's indigestion is another man's heartburn," says Dr. Donald 0. Castell, head of the gastroenterology section at B o w m a n - G r a y S c h o o l o f Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C. The best preventive, according t o D r . C a s t e l l a n d o t h e r gastroenterologists, is to avoid or at least limit the consumption of food, drink and seasoning that might aggravate the condition. Meals that are high in protein and carbohydrates and low in fat are the least likely to cause heart burn. Because it is not always possible or practical to maintain regular eating habits, most physicians recommend an effective over-the- counter antacid for those who suf fer from heartburn. One brand that is frequently recommended is G^aviscon, which is uniquely for mulated for heartburn. "I see people gulping down food at airports and rushing at fast- food places,"notes Dr. Gordon McHardy, emeritus professor of medicine at Louisiana State University. "It's become a part of American lifestyle. We should take the time to enjoy our food and give our digestive tract a happy, relaxed medium in which to work."
