Buick tests shopping mall waters - FLINT, Mich. - Believed to be the first marketing effort of its kind in the automobile industry, Buick Motor Division is testing a high-technology Con sumer Information Center at shopping malls in Miami and in suburban Dallas. Located at the Irv ing Mall in Irving, Tex., and at the Inter national Mall in Miami, Fla., the two centers offered a broad variety of automotive and Buick information at self- fpntained 15x20 foot permanent centers in t&e malls' central cor ridors. >The centers are open (hiring normal mall Bours, staffed by train ed Buick product ad- Vjsors. >"Consumers have come to expect the %test technology in qars they buy," said Ronald E. Hackworth, B u i c k g e n e r a l manage 'igowe w t§ give"#® rai, portunity xo use -- seme levels ofddvanc ed technology to help in their buying deci sions." , The centers offers tHe shopper informa tion on driving and safety, product reports from consumer and government publica tions, and magazine reprints -- as well as a c o m p u t e r a n d telephone link-up directly to Buick head quarters. Based on results from the two pilot loca tions, Buick plans to make Consumer In formation Centers available in other high-traffic areas within possibly, the next 12 months. "The Center is a natural extension of Buick's goal of technological leader ship," Hackworth said. "We want to help simplify the difficult car-buying decision by making a wide variety o f i n f o r m a t i o n available at a time and place convenient to the consumer." "We're not selling cars at the Center," Hackworth added. "To do that, the customer will have to go to a dealership. Of course, we hope it will be a Buick dealership." The Buick product advisors can respond to consumer questions and assist in opera tions of the computer and electronic equip ment, said Kirk W. Aubry, manager of Buick's Marketing Through Technology department, a staff established in 1982 to bring technological in novation to Buick's. marketing efforts. "We must be able to respond effectively to the needs of today's consumers -- a group t h a t i s m o r e discriminating, more computer-literate, and far more interested in purchasing products presented in a way that accommodates their life styles," he % expect ei to learn about out d u c t s o r T o haphazardly drop by o u r s t o r e t o b u y something." One of the tools used at the Consumer In formation Center to provide information in an accurate and time ly manner is Buick's Electronic Product In- formation Center (EPIC), a system tested for more than two years and now available to Buick dealers. EPIC uses an IBM computer to present information in seven programs: Product Informa tion: Specific model data, competitive comparisons, warran ty and maintenance in formation, and Buick cross-model com parisons. Graphics and text provide regularly updated, visually appealing in formation. Another version of EPIC at the Consumer Information Center, and it othet/-public faculties around the country, features a touch-screen terminal providing computer generated graphics or f u 1 1 • m o t i o n v i d e o / a u d i o . T h e system allows users to enter their name and address to obtain addi t i o n a l i n f o r m a t i o n about Buick. The Center also has a direct-dial telephone to allow consumers to speak directly with a Buick representative in Flint. "The whole concept o f e l e c t r o n i c marketing is just com ing into its own," said A.L. Roman, Buick's director of merchan dising. "We're several steps ahead of the pack, and we're im p l e m e n t i n g n e w developments every day to retain that leadership. "In our Marketing Through Technology Department, systems engineers and pro grammers actually sit next to sales and marketing people to make sure we make every possible use of available technology. High technology on cars obviously sells. And so does high technology in the en tire selling process." Did you know? Did you know that your new car is lighter and possibly much stronger than the cars people drove just a few years ago? One reason i s a n i n n o v a t i v e material now used in a u t o m o t i v e construction. Here are some facts you should know: • Your car's panels (hood, door panels, quarter panels and rear deck lids) are able to resist denting a n d o t h e r m i n o r damage if the vehicle features a special design component called Betabrace • reinforcement sheet. • This is a structural reinforcement sheet u s e d b y m a j o r automakers which strengthens sheet m e t a l w i t h o u t s u b s t a n t i a l l y increasing its weight. I t a l s o d a m p s vibrations and reduces environmental noise. I t h e l p s p r e v e n t denting of hoods and rear deck lids, as well as palm printing and oil canning, which are dents that pop back, but weaken the metal when the car is leaned on. • I t s u n i q u e c o m b i n a t i o n o f strength and resilience resists distortion by distributing impact or other stresses evenly over a wide area. Created by Essex Specialty Products, it is designed to prevent m a n y k i n d s o f d e f o r m a t i o n t h a t would permanently d a m a g e a n unreinforced panel. It would seem to be something that can keep a new car on the road to looking better longer. US. MAIL ha flrtt airmail MCVIC* In th« Ui began May II, l i lt.
