I ' m a l w a y s surprised by the number of cars on the street with large rust spots. When tiny chips or dents in the car's f i n i s h a r e l e f t unchecked, rust can eat away at these metal surfaces and cause an expensive body repair job down the road. Most people know that winter weather and highway salt can do a lot of damage and h a v e t h e i r c a r s washed regularly. But year-round exposure to dirt artd leaves can also cause problems w h e n t h i s d e b r i s becomes lodged in a r e a s b e h i n d t h e bumper and corrodes the car's finish. Pontiac full of 'hot air' O n e l e a d i n g American automaker may soon rise to new heights of popularity, thanks to a clever idea involving a hot-air balloon. F o r y e a r s t h e Pontiac emblem has been primarily affixed t o s t y l i s h , r o a d - hugging performance automobiles. Now, the famous name has left the ground altogether and. taken to the skies emblazoned upon a s e v e n - s t o r y - h i g h racing balloon. While most forms of promotion spread hot air, this one envelops It--77,500 cubic feet of it to be exact. The white Pontiac name [esfr"tigalnst thp *'s red fabric can be seen clearly from as far as five miles away. Yet in an electronic society weaned on 30- s e c o n d t e l e v i s i o n commercials, why did the automaker invest i n s o m e t h i n g a s tranquil as a hot-air balloon to carry its message? "Hot-air ballooning appeals to the same type of person our cars appeal to--young, sporty, and living life to the fullest," declares Mike L o s h , P o n t i a c ' s general manager and a GM vice president. "I think those people will get a kick out of s e e i n g o u r n a m e floating above their head*." C h r i s t e n e d "Excitement," which t i e s i n w i t h t h e division's product theme, its balloon will be seen at promotional events and will be entered in a variety of b a l l o o n i n g c o m p e t i t i o n s throughout the year. • It recently competed i n t h e M a y f l o w e r C h a l l e n g e i n Plymouth, Michigan, a s w e l l a s w i t h balloons representing more than 30 countries (100 entries, 14 from the U.S.A.) in the Seventh World Hot-Air Balloon Championship i n B a t t l e C r e e k , Michigan, finishing 26th. Flying the Pontiac balloon in competition is champion aeronaut Phil Glebe of Brighton, Michigan. Like all American balloonists, he is licensed by the F e d e r a l A v i a t i o n Administration for lighter-than-air flight. One of Glebe's recent challenges has been a flight of 83 miles across Lake Michigan in February weather. He will compete in the world championships in 1987 in Austria. G l e b e s a y s t h i s balloon has an obvious appeal. "Of course, a b a l l o o n i s h i g h l y visible, but unlike more conventional forms of advertising, the impact is greater. The sight leaves a p r e t t y i n d e l i b l e imoression on your "We Guarantee what we sell." 1985 MUSTANG Power Steering, Stereo, Low Miles *6895 1984 F150 PICK-UP 6 Cyl Automatic A C ful l Power '8995 1984 MERC.
