WALZ Networks standing up to actors' demand# There was a time when previously unknown stars who had catapulted to fame because of their audi ence appeal would have been able to force the net works to increase their sal aries and perks. But with their costs escalating, the networks and their program suppliers have begun to be more wary about perfomers' excessive demands. For instance, when "Three's Company's" Suzanne Somers asked ABC for a huge salary boost last year, the network turned her down and removed her from the show. Because of her demands. Miss Somers has since had a difficult time restoring her reputa tion with network, execu tives. Priscilla Barnes, Miss Somers' replacement, has not only shown good acting abilities at a far lower cost to the network, but has also helped the long-run ning ABC sitcom achieve even higher ratings. Popular "Dukes of Hazzard" stars John Schneider and Tom Wopat seemed to ignore the les son taught by "Three's Company" -- that a show's star can be replaced with little damage to its success. Wopat and Schneider recently decided to leave the series after suing Warner Bros., the show's producers, about a licens ing agreement. Instead of attempting to settle with the pair. CBS told Warners to find two new actors to Christopher Mayer replace them. The networks contend that Wopat and Schneid er's roles aren'l as impor tant as Cathy Bath's char acter or even "as the souped-up "General Lee" automobile. Byron Cherry and Chris topher Mayer eventually were chosen following audi tions that attracted more than 1,000 hopefuls. They'll portray cduslns 0oy and Vance Duke'. ChetVy, 25, is a native af Atlanta who has Served fes a flight attendant. Mayer. 28. has had some limited stage and O^reen experience. Meanwhile, NBC and MQM have replaced "CHiPs" cast member Car ry Wilcox, whoee request for a substantial raise was refused. Although Wilcox has said he left the series to pursue projects for his own production company, some sources claim he was fired because of his demand. His replacement is Tom Reilly. who starred in the "Force Seven" episode of *the show last year, if (e)tsarci ii|*in ^ s i
