Afterall, the Sport Stop had won the first meeting 25-2 and had already wrapped up the eastern division title in men's 10-inch softbsU with s 12-3 record. Phylly's Inn entered the gsme with just the opposite mark at 3-12. Needless to say, John's was a heavy favorite Tuesdsy night in the regulsr season finale. But with star first baseman Rick Wakitsch absent from the game, the question arose thst could he be caught in the 16-inch betting rsce? Wakitsch hsd been the regular season leader for more than two- thirds of the summer and stood a solid .717 on 43 hits in M trips to the piste. But teammates Rich Thompson < 667) and Bernie MscKrowski (.660) had been right on his heels throughout those months. It seemed now only a minor miracle could upset Wakitsch from the title. Thompson, his nearest competitor, did his best st reaching for the .700 plateau as he had four straight hits including s double, but walked in his fifth plate appesrance. Thompson finished second in the league with a 684 mark going 34-for-49 MscKrowski nad three straight hits snd s wslk, but lined out to center field in his last time st bat to finish third in the league at .667 With several of the Sport Stop players siming for slots in the East's top 19 batting rsce, victory by the Sport Stop was imminent. Pounding out B hits, Sport Stop routed Phylly's Inn 82-0 in s quick five-inning affair Joining Thompson with four hits were Tom Les, Ron Lentine, and Bob "Bubba" Hlousek Hlousek included his sixth home run of the season which tied him for second best in the East.
