The seals are being blamed for the cod shortage even though scientists agree that the seal‘s diet consists of less than 1% cod. Studies also show that the seal population is expanding very slowly, if at all. The seals are being used as scapeâ€" goats for the overfishing that caused the crisis. Earlier this year, Fisheries Minister John Crosbie suggested that 500,000 seals could be killed. With the present cod fishing moratorium proâ€"sealing forces will pressure for a mass slaughter of baby seals. January 20, 199 In a letter to the Beaver, former chief of paediatrics at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Dr. John Egger makes his points sucâ€" cinetly: "COMMENT Nearly 500 people die in home fires every year in Canada. Many of these victims could still be alive today if they had been protected by a working smoke alarm. Most fatal fires occur at night when everyone is asleep. Under these circumstances, you can be overcome by smoke and never wake up. A smoke alarm will detect a fire in its earty stages and sound a waming which will give you a chance to escape. PuD 1993 BUDGET COMMITTEE TOWN HALL MEETING CALENDAR SCHEDULE THE OAKVILLE BEAVER As the issue stands now it is but one of six clinical services being looked at for regionalization. Simply put, there is a move to centralize some services in hospitals to reduce duplication and have area hospitals essentially share the same services. Being looked at are out patient cancer services; ophthalmology; psychiatric in patient care; urology; cardiac surgery and paediatrics. One option is to concentrate paediatrics at either OTMH or Joseph Brant hospital in Burlington. But as Dr. Egger maintains, it makes a lot of sense in places like Toronto where hospitals are but a few blocks apart. But here. it‘s far different.
