Open to young people interested in music as a career who are living, studying, or have family residence in Halton Region, the competition offers three cash prizes. Winners will receive $400 for the under 14 group; $700 for those between 14 and 17; and $1,000 for the 18 to 24â€" yearâ€"old group. Winners may also | be invited to perform with the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. In light of the great success of | the program to date, this initiative excites the Optimist Club and the Symphony who hope that the comâ€" | petition will assist those aspiring to a musical career, and that it will assist to develop a pool of talent for the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. Those desiring to participate may do so by forwarding a tape, together with an application. Applications are available through local schools, music teachers, music stores, and libraries. In addition, copies may be obtained by calling Don MacDonald, Chairman, Youth Activities of the Optimist Club at 847â€"6628. In brief, the principal rules are as follows: Eligibility: Open to those living in Halton Region who have not attained their 25th birthday by April 4th, 1993. Tape Specs: Either cassette or reelâ€"toâ€"reel format acceptable. Music Selection: Up to three selections to a maximum of 30 minâ€" utes, and must have one movement or work from three of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary periods. All selecâ€" tions requiring accompaniment must have accompaniment on the tape. When: Tapes must be submitted by 6:00 p.m., March 12th, 1993, to Optimist Club of Oakville, c/o Don G. MacDonald, 1305 Rebecca Street, Oakville L6L 123. Judging of the tapes will take place March 14th and entrants will be advised on March 16th.
