A recommendation for the Halton Board of Education to switch from a calendarâ€"year budget to a schoolâ€"year budget is expected to be presented to the board‘s finance committee Monday night. While the Town of Oakville has just about finalized its budget, the board is just beginning the process and officials explain it‘s because yearâ€"end figures aren‘t available until January, based on a calendar year. Trustees will then have six weeks to deal with the projected $300â€"million budget before it is forwarded to the Ministry of Education. It‘s expected the suggestion to change the budget year will be part of that package, said education director Bob Williams Thursday. Already, the board has held four meetings to hear and discuss budget preâ€" sentations made in January by members of the public. "Historically this is the way the board has always operated," said board chairman Dave Coons, adding, change won‘t be forthcoming "until a majority of trustees give direction to administraâ€" tion to change the procedure." To date, there has been no such direction. Williams said the current budgeting system is "crazy" since the school board operates on a school year basis (September to August) but budgets on a MADD meeting Monday night Dave King, chairman of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), will be the guest speaker for the inaugural meeting of the organizaâ€" tion‘s Oakville Chapter. King‘s topic of discussion will be "Making a difference in solving the most deadly social problem: drinkâ€" inc and drivine." The local chapter urges members of the public to "come and support (the group‘s) endeavors and learn about the many ways you can help reduce the death and injuries caused by impaired drivers. The board sets its expenditure budget based on the previous year‘s statements, then factors in Ministry of Education grant revenues before tallying how much money must be raised through local property taxes for revenues to meet the expenditures. The director said if the board approves such a move, the change would occur whether or not the province follows suit but Williams said it looks like the province will do so in the wake of educational reform studies currently underway.
