Inside, the Summit uses one of those sweeping. upside down Lâ€"shaped For 1993, the Summit has been completely reworked and remains on a par in terms of size, performance and concept with Corolla/Civic/Sentra it‘s major competitors in the Japanese home market. Styling is neither radical nor outdated. It has euroâ€"induced lines following the current Japanese vogue of trying to round out every spot that was once sharply creased in the days of wedge styling. The surprise of the week of the most recent testing session was, for me anyway. the Eagle Summit sedan.Built in Japan by Mitsubishi for Chrysler, I was attracted by price (yes there I go about price again) because it had air and power accessories in the under $15.000 bracket. © But what really amazed was how handy and zippy the car was on the highway. about our annual test week at Shannonville Raceway Park. As I found the previous year in the standout Summit wagon, the cloth has an expensive feel and you notice the dashboards pioneered by Saab in the 9000 and now almost universal in Japanese sedans. It features a semiâ€"cirâ€" cular main instrument cluster which flows into a central console "stalk" for heat/air controls, radio/cassette and miscellaneous things like cigarette lighter/ashtray and/or power point for your radar det... err CB unit. $21,522 1993 Eagle Summit Es 4â€"Door Sedan Advertisement $1,100 $750 $2,888 $1,038 $515 $160 $133 $140 The Eagle Summit may not be the first name that pops into your mind when you think small, imported econoâ€" my car, but it sure is worth taking a look at. Trunk space is big enough for the playpen and folded stroller, but not much else. And for those who like a luxury touch, the sedan and coupe come with optional trim packages. The test sedan had the "Deluxe Convenience Package" which includes: variable speed wipers; cruise control; and a rarity in this class, tilt wheel. The chassis is amazing. I had a fourâ€"door ES to test for a week and it included a sport suspension package adding front antisway bars and higher spring rates. Suspension is MacPherson at the front and trailing arms with links at the rear. It also includes body color front and rear bumpers and side mouldâ€" ings. In a very right red, it also had a jaunty little spoiler at the back. I felt quite the George Mitty! The car is a delight in any type of traffic. It‘s quick enough to edge out the guy in the 350â€"cubicâ€"inch beater who‘s trying to cut you off; yet easy enough on fuel to require only two fillups during the time I had it. The featherâ€"weight clutch is hobâ€" bled by a baulky cable shifter. Every time you go for a quick, smooth gear change, you get hung up in the middle of the shift quadrant with an audible "groonck" as the cable finally gets the message to the gear synchronizers. The first thing you notice is how fast the engine climbs the rev counter and how quick you‘re suddenly going. You almost have to shift before you think, which brings up a sore point. Step into the ES and you get a 1.8â€" litre, 16â€"valve four with 113 hp and 116 torques. Transaxle choices are a fiveâ€" speed manual or a fourâ€"speed overdrive automatic as an option. The 1.8 engine is available as on option on the DL. This is Canada with 100kmh superâ€" highways and I think the 1.8â€"litre should be made standard just to keep up to the flow of traffic. The DL comes with a 12â€"valve, fourâ€"cylinder with fiveâ€"speed manual or threeâ€"speed automatic. The threeâ€" speed autobox is optional on the ES couple but I ean‘t imagine who would want it. The 1.5â€"litre engine in the DL produces 92 horses and 93 torques. The Eagle Summit comes in the aforementioned wagon, a twoâ€"door coupe and fourâ€"door sedan. The coupe and sedan have two trim levels, base "DL" and comprehensively equipped "ES" as presented to us at Shannonville. Both cars are frontâ€" engined and frontâ€"drive. quality of the plastics is also top drawâ€" er. I drive a lot of cars in a year and you soon get to notice how many different grades of interior plastics there are. As an owner, you won‘t notice until you get into the car of a neighbor and then it‘s too late to upgrade.
