Festival chairman pleased to contribute time The format for this year‘s Festival is expanded to include Lakeside Park, at the foot of Navy Street, in addition to downtown Oakville. There will, again, be two stages at Coronation Park and one in Bronte. Accordingly, the budget will grow to $400,000 from $250,000 last year, completely covered through corporate sponsorâ€" ships. The entertainment is guaranteed top notch. Headliners include Blue Rodeo, Jack Grunsky and Midnight Hour. Other changes will see the date set back two weeks in June (June 25, 26 and 27), to give the lake additional time to warm for the boaters, and to accommodate the exam timeâ€"tables of teenagers. All profits from the Waterfront Festival â€" touted last year as the fourth largest in Ontario â€" go to worâ€" thy causes within the community. But more about the chairman, Jack P. Meyers. He was born in Saskatoon during the dirtyâ€"thirties and moved to Brandon, Manitoba with his family at the age of eight. Jack‘s father was a carpenter and his mother a teacher. He had (and has) a brother and a sisâ€" ter. After high school, he went to Brandon College, University of Manitoba, to earn his BSc in Chemistry. He joined Brandon Packers (now owned by Burns) right out of college. Declared Meyers, "Ger did a terrifâ€" ic job, but we learned a lot in the first year. I recognized we needed more strength in the organization, so the first thing I did was name three vice chairs." (There were two last year). As well, he has insisted that every comâ€" mittee chairperson have a coâ€"chair or vice, "in order to build more strength into the management" of the event. The boss expects the number of total volunteers will climb to 6,000. His move from the technical to the marketing and management side of the business was steady and upward. He jumped from food processing to (Continued from page 3) along with the Chairmanship of the Festival. The former CEO is putting his own particular stamp on the organization, of course. 7'15AM To 4 P.M.†, DR. GREG THOMSON 338â€"7227 581 ARGUS ROAD, OAKVILLE Since his retirement, he‘s been accepting shortâ€"term consulting proâ€" jects along with his volunteer jobs. Last year, he did a feasibility study on a saskatoonberry liqueur for some folks in his native province. Realistically, he had to conclude that, though the product was good, the market was too small and the liqueur business in particular was declining. The prairie elixir never got to the marketplace. "I like to get involved in new things. I don‘t mind jumping right into a project, and I like to change things, improve the way they‘re done," he commented. "In most cases, I‘ve been lucky. The things I‘ve changed have turned out okay." the supply side when he took a job with the McCormickâ€"Stangy organiâ€" zation, a company with which he spent almost 30 years, largely in their industrial supply division dealing with such products as seasonings for potato chips, sauces, and other preâ€" pared foods. Jack, and his wife Joan, were marâ€" ried in Brandon in 1955. They had three sons and a daughter, now all grown. They are grandparents six times over. Meyers is philosophical about his career choices. Getting into the food industry was probably a fluke, he said, but once he got there, he liked it and stuck with it. Success? "It‘s the old theory about being in the right place at the right time," he admitted modestly. But there is no denying he had a certain drive, "From the beginning, I wanted to run things." One of his greatest business coups was in landing McCormick â€" the Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken contract for all of Canada, and later the United Kingdom. Currently, he‘s involved in a Canadian government project to assess dehydrated vegetables. (From the sublime to the ridiculous some would say). All kidding aside, Meyers is a decent, straight forward guy who makes sound executive decisions as a matter of course.
