These are small insects that inhabit N most of North America, living under ‘ shells fixed to a tree or shrub, or â€" attached to their bodies. The scales stay in the same place for their short lives sucking food from the host plant. Eggs are laid or young are live born in the spring. These crawlers move to a new location on the host. Scale seldom kills mature shrubs or trees rapidâ€" ly, but if left alone will weaken or kill them in a few years. Young trees may die the first year. The mature scales and the eggs may be killed by an application of dormant oil and/or dormant lime sulphur. The application must be made before buds start to develâ€" op on the plants. Oil and lime sulphur may be combined at lower conâ€" centrations into a single dormant spray. The oil helps conâ€" trol scale and other insects, and the lime sulphur helps control many fungus diseases such as peach leaf curl. WHAT TO SPRAY The spray program for apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach, plum, apple, and pear in Publication #64 suggests dormant oil sprays for scale.
