The committee approved a recomâ€" mendation to amend the town‘s taxi bylaw to permit the operation of wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cabs withâ€" in the town. The committee‘s recomâ€" mendation will have to be approved by council on March 22nd before going ahead. If the bylaw amendment wins council‘s approval, it would effectiveâ€" ly clear the way for proposals by taxi companies wishing to provide a wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cab serâ€" vice to Oakville‘s seniors and physiâ€" cally challenged. There are currently 45 taxiâ€"cabs licensed for operation by the town. Under the proposal, Halton Taxi, which owns and operates the majority of the taxiâ€"cabs, would transfer two of its plates to wheelchair accessible vehicles. Oakville taxi industry members agree that approving any additional plates at this time would have a negaâ€" tive impact on their industry. The town has also received a proâ€" posal from a Milton taxiâ€"cab compaâ€" ny which wants to operate four wheelchair accessible vehicles in Oakville. That would require the town approval of four additional plates, raising the number of taxiâ€" cabs licensed in Oakville from 45 to 49. "We request the town consider Halton Taxi with a favorable attitude when awarding the contract (for proâ€" viding wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cab service) in the future, if at all possiâ€" ble," Doreen Blake, managing direcâ€" tOr te Halton Taxi is proposing the operâ€" n of two vehicles, seven days a LOCKWOOD CHRYSLER f Halton Taxi. told the commit $14,300 1992 SUNDANCE 5 DOOR HATCHBACK $5,800 845â€"6653 1987 DODGE ARIES 4 DOOR $8,600 $8,800 $2,800 $8,800 $3,800 $5,800 1989 PLYMOUTH COLT DL 1984 PLYMOUTH RELIANT 1987 CHRYSLER NEW YORKER 1988 ISUZU LTD 4X4 1992 DYNASTY LE 1988 ISUZU TROOPER LTD Wyecroft Road week, 24 hours a day, which would charge the same tariff as regular taxiâ€" cabs, she said. Blake said the units â€" which will cost around $35,000 each â€" would be dispatched like regular taxis but with priority to providing special service to seniors and the physically chalâ€" lenged. If all goes well, Halton Taxi wants to have the service running by May 1st, she said. Blake also requested the town waive licensing fees totalling about $240 for the vehicles for the first two years of operation. The committee made no decision on the request. Oakville senior Earl Fenton, who is confined to a wheelchair and a regâ€" ular user of the town‘s Careâ€"Aâ€"Van service, applauded the taxi compaâ€" ny‘s proposal. Fenton told the committee that wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cabs would provide a viable alternative during the evenings and weekends. "After 6:15 p.m. the Careâ€"Aâ€"Vans don‘t operate using assigned drivers. Wheelchair users depend on drivers who volunteer their time on evenings and weekends," Fenton said. But Johnny Walker, a spokesperâ€" son for Canadian Auto Workers Local 1256, which represents Oakville Transit workers, said the taxi company‘s proposal is a move to take over a service currently provided by Careâ€"Aâ€"Van. "(Halton Taxi‘s) decision is based on the volume of business they will Easter is just around the corner and the Fareshare Foodbank needs help in restocking its dwindling supplies. The Fareshare Foodbank‘s annual Easter Food Drive takes place April 7th to 12th. "We really need this food drive at Easter to keep us going throughout the year," said Laura Watson, a Director at the Foodbank. As well, the food bank is in need of volunteers to help sort the donations it receives. Last year, approximately 60,000 pounds of food was donated to help Oakville‘s needy. "That‘s when we really need the added help," said Watson. Presently, there are 30 regular volunteers as well as those who help out when they can, but this is not enough to dedl with the rush of donations they receive at Easter, says Watson. Donations can be dropped off at any local fire station, supermarket food drop or at the Fareshare Foodbank at 1240 Speers Road, Unit 6. Hours of operation for the food bank are, Monday 10 a.m. to 2p.m., Tuesday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.. areshare Foodbank holding aster food drive next month < molg t 6 EOeeâ€"r i / -‘? 0 _ presented by Sincerely, Dr.Andary Vicki Werkman, Sandra Blair and Bridget Hriblian get from Care getting the we siderable purc committee. Because of a shortage of trained Careâ€"Aâ€"Van drivers, up to 40 calls per day have to be handled by Halton Taxi, he said. But the union hopes to have 50% of its drivers trained to drive the vehicles within the next few months, which would drastically reduce the number of calls going to Halton Taxi. Walker said he opposes the town giving Halton Taxi "any special break or handâ€"out" to provide wheelchair accessible taxi service. "We see (Halton Taxi‘s) proposal as the start of getting 100% taxi usage (for Careâ€"Aâ€"Van)," he said. David Hanes, project manager of the Ministry of Transportation‘s wheelchair accessible taxi program, supported the move to amend the town‘s taxi: bylaw to allow wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cabs in Oakville. "The province doesn‘t approve taxi operators looking to make a quick grab of public funds. It‘s to provide equal service to everyone in the public. To suggest the whole serâ€" vice be operated by one party just doesn‘t make sense," Hanes said. Hanes said there are currently 41 private taxiâ€"cab companies across the province which provide wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cab service. The numâ€" ber is expected to grow to 66 by the end of 1994. rk ha /an. If they weren‘t it would be a conâ€" ," Walker told the
