Why would any- one spend $92,5()() for a Jaguar sedan? When a small group of North American autowriters were invited by Jaguar to drive the firm's newest V12- engined sedan, they were upfront enough to give us all the details about the car before leaving, including the lofty price. Jaguar has had a V12 engine in its lineup since 1972. Unburstable and tur- bine-smooth, time, weight, and gas guz- zler taxes did it in. The last V12 Series III sedan rolled off the assembly line last fall. But it was a case of the V12 is dead, long live the new V12. Jaguar's semi-official racing partner, TWR Engineering, had taken the old V12 and re-engineered it. Punched it out to 6.0-Litres and gave it superb low-end torque. It was such a success in the lim- ited edition TWR-built XJR-S coupes, Iaguar seized upon it as a possible , motive unit for a new top-of-the-line vehicle. using a version of the current X140 sedan we know here in 4.0-Litre inline six form as the Sovereign. Okay, it costs a lot to reproduce an engine like the V12. but I still had trou- ble with the price. The body shell is vir- tually identical but the six-cylinder Sovereign lists at $74,200. The outgoing 1992 V12 Vanden Plas listed at $72,100. So how do they justify $92,500? I was to learn the cost is really value which has been added throughout the car and is the first tangible result of the more than $4 billion investment Ford 1994 Jaguar XJ1 2 made I 989 During a tour of the factory at Brown's Lane, in England, evidence of reorganization and rationalization was everywhere. In one telling section, a wallchart showed the immense effort put on by everyone to improve quality based on the system Ford uses. Faults have fallen from approximately 2,500/l00 cars in 1989 to about 200- 300/ 100 cars now. A "fault" might be a paint dot I would never see if it wastt't pointed out, but it is enough for inspec.,- tors to haul in whole sections of line assemblers for a conference. Thankfully, the old methods of hand- laying the walnut vaneers remains untouched. What a joy to watch a crafts- man strip inserts into a walnut facia with a deftness of touch and understanding which can only be attained over the years. The same is true for the fitting of the Connolly hides. It's all handstitched. I've seen computer attempts to mimic what Jaguar does. Like imitation Japanese Scotch whisky, robot stitching detracts from what can only be made through the combination of the five senses. But it's not all bespoke production and clockwork construction. Jaguar uses an avant-tech Nippondenso electrical system. And they are prepared to back what they've accomplished with a four- year/50,0N mile warranty with 24-hou'r roadside assistance available. Imagine that being years ago! What I found most refreshing was the honesty of the Jaguar officials. They freely admitted there had been problems in the past. But they were all prepared to back up their claim the X112 is not only the finest Jaguar they've ever made, but the best luxury V12 sedan in the world. High words these, but it was all proved on the winding roads through the Basque region of southwest France. The route followed was a combination of autoroute and B-road, but mostly it was winding blacktop through narrow little villages which one would think aren't suited to a big sedan like the X112. The new engine produces 301 hp and 336 ft/lb. of torque driving through a General Motors-sourced automatic four-speed overdrive transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels which are upgraded from the Sovereign to P22560 ZR l6 Pirellis on forged, alloy lattice wheels. Suspension is indepen- dent all-round with anti-lock brakes. As robots take over production and cost-efficiency people cut comers, prod- ucts where quality comes first whether a, Cross pen or a Jaguar XJ 12 will aiwaysl be worth the asking price, because they are more than a manmade instrumen designed to fulfill a task - they are extension of the human lucky enough t possess one. Inside, it is the same aural and olfac- tory celebration of the senses. The leather has that suppleness the Japanese are still trying to obtain. The woods are lovingly matched. Turn the key and the big 12 effortlessly spins into life, the mark of a quality engineering. There is no engine sound at idle. At speed, the only noise comes from the air being split by the outside remote mirrors. What they can't duplicate is th finesse and the friendliness of the X113 on the inside. Neither can they claim th breeding and that visual intangible that comes with the sensual shape of the, Jaguar, a car not confused with an other. 1 The seats are 12-way power adjustable. The carpets are Wilton and deeper in pile than my living room. _ On the road, Jaguar's J-gate shift lever allows manual selection between second and third at cruising speed. It's just the thing for brushing off pernicious Basques in their ancient Citroens doing everything known to the laws of physics to try and get around the big Jag in lurid attempts to show us a thing or two. Music to while away autoroute hem comes from an eight-speaker, 80-watt stereo. . Later in the day we turned the big cat loose on the autoroute southward towards Spain, gobbling up kilometres at a phenomenal pace, yet feeling in control of everything inside and outside the car. Thanks to the amount of glass and the comfortable placing of seat, steering wheel, and instruments, [hi driver has the sense of being wholly . control; a feeling only possible through years of refinement and which approaches an art form inside the X112. l But is it worth $92,500? A BMW, 750i or the ungainly V12 S-Clas I Mercedes-Benz put new meaning t overcharging, making the X112 see almost a bargain. when it purchased J Wed offered by Jaguar only fwe lay, March Ulif 199 1rsln
