The necessary basics are not there. Interest rates are falling. The period of high GIC rates is over. Fixed income options should not be used when the objective is long- term growth. They are a formula for failure. If you want a good long-term return, you must look to a “growth” investment. Growth is available from equity investments. This is not a prediction â€" it’s the way it works. History will support this logic. ' Research from The University of Western Ontario studied investment results f_rom 1950 to 1987. It tracked simple fixed income investments such as GICs, T- Bills, and‘ bonds, versus equity investments. In 26 of the 29 ten-year periods, equity investments were better. In other words, the GIC investor only won in three of 29 time frames. The irony is that many GIC investors shop for the best rate. They want to get the most from an investment that hardly ever gives the best investment returns. That is the question many people are asking themselves these days. The final decision will be based on your specific situation, but it is worth consideration. Fixed income investments do have good characteristics, but growth is not one of them. With low interests, everyone will have to rethink their investment options. Should you be repositioning some of those low- yielding GICs to growth oriented equities? Next week, this column will focus on equity investments. See you then. Peter Watson, MBA, CFP. Before a decision, you will want to examine equity investments. Collect the facts before making a decision.
