By ANGELA BLACKBURN Oakville Beaver Staff It was just after 11 a.m. Friday when the Michael Jackson lookâ€"alike (Chris Edwards of La Cage dinâ€" ner theatre) had walked through the front door of the Kelsey‘s head office suitably clad in ringlets and a black hat, pink lipstick, heavy perfume, tight black pants with chain and a red stripe down the side, a white tâ€"shirt and shirt, sunglasses and black studded boots. With media, including Toronto‘s CFTO, attracted to the scheme, things at first didn‘t look good when a receptionist told the lookâ€"aâ€"like Michael his "We‘ve had some people get very aggressive in getting a job with us, but never to this extent," said Kelsey‘s Restaurants Inc. president Michael Brock. Martyn calls on Mikey to help land a job at Kelsey‘s Will ‘Bad‘ promotion pay off? intended recipient, food and beverages director Peter De Groot, wasn‘t even in the office. However, a quick trip by the receptionist into the back office drew out a gentleman who at first announced himself to be the "chief cook and bottle washer" and then admitted he was the company‘s president. At first a little baffled, potentially even annoyed, Brock began to roll with the occasion â€" and TV cameras â€" eventually signing off with "Nice to meet you, Mike" to the lookâ€"alike. It succeeded in getting Simonsky an invitation to come inside and meet Brock as well as explain a promotion idea Simonsky put forth for Kelsey‘s to help needy children â€" similar to what Michael Jackson does for childrenâ€" with a program called With a ghettoâ€"blaster blaring Jackson‘s hit song, "I‘m Bad", Edwards said to Brock "I‘m bad, I‘m bad. Martyn Simonsky is the baddest. Hire him and he will produce for you! 225â€"4115. Call him ‘cause he is the baddest!" and then did a short moonwalk imitation. Public school board applauds 3â€"year JK delay By ANGELA BLACKBURN Oakville Beaver Staff i he NDP provincial governâ€" ‘ment‘s decision to delay K. â€" mandatory implementation of Junior Kindergarten (JK) from September 1994 to 1997 has been deemed a victory by the chairman of the Halton Board of Education. "In my view he was listening to Halton. Mr. Cooke finally came to his senses as I knew he would," said Coons. The news was definitely welcomed by the Halton public school board chairman. "‘Not only am I aware that the conâ€" stituents in Halton, are not wanting it, they can‘t afford it and when we revisâ€" it this issue in 1997 I strongly suspect there will be a different minister," said Coons. Politically, Coons said the announcement made by Cooke was not surprising. The Halton board has fought against the September 1994 JK deadâ€" line for over 18 months. The board estimated it would cost $9 million to implement in Halton. Cooke was reported to have cited financial considerations as a reason behind the delay, but Coons said aside from the financial considerations, peoâ€" ple, at least in Halton, don‘t want JK. Trustees recently noted they hadn‘t received any significant number of resident inquiries about JK. One trustee, Oakville‘s Lynne Clark said she‘d received one phone call on the issue. "Are you going to force your valâ€" ues on somebody else? That‘s not what you‘re elected to do," said Coons, adding, "If constituents in Halton wanted JK there would have been a different thrust and we would probably have been dealing with it five or ten years ago. Early Bird Price ‘til April 30/93 In his announcement Cooke decidâ€" "ed to discard a proposed law, Bill 88, that would have made JK mandatory across Ontario by 1994, instead allowâ€" ing for a phaseâ€"in period for the target date of 1997. Today‘s The minister announced the govâ€" ernment wasn‘t backing off the route, just recognizing current economic difâ€" ficulties. Across Ontario only 18 of the 162 school board are not offering JK, among them is the Halton Board of Education, as well as public boards in Peel, Durham and York.
