By TOM MICHIBATA Oakville Beaver staff Eugenio Raso and John Sola will be getting their kicks south of the border starting this fall. Both are heading to U.S. colâ€" leges on soccer scholarships; Raso at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Sola at Siena College in Loudonville, NY. Both are Division I schools. Raso, an 18â€"yearâ€"old forward/midfielder, and Sola, an 18â€"yearâ€"old midfielder, currently star for the St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School team. And Aquinas coâ€"coach Mike Hendrickse says both should thrive on the U.S. college scene. "John has good ball control and he moves fast on the ball. Eugenio is exceptional in his strength and speed. His speed with the ball is incredible." Illinois coach Sasha Begovic echoes Hendrickse‘s sentiments. "Eugenio is a very skillful and smart player," Begovic said. "He is good with both feet. He can visualâ€" ize and create things from almost nothine." For Raso, Illinois was originally his second choice, behind the University of Maryland, but he‘s glad it‘s worked out the way it has. Financially Illinois is taking care of everything except insurance ($120) and a few other minor expenses. "Maryland was asking me to pay $1,500 but I couldn‘t afford it," Raso explained. Other schools that contacted him were Detroit, Oral Roberts, Quincy College and Lynor Rhyan (NAIA). Outside of school, Raso plays for the National Soccer League underâ€"19 selects and was a former member of the Canadian national underâ€"17 side. Four of his teamâ€" mates from the NSL selects are also going to Illinois. "It‘s also closer to home â€" an eightâ€"hour drive compared to 14 hours to Maryland." Sola will sign his letter of intent sometime next week. He went down to visit the Sienna campus in early April and came away impressed. "It‘s good for academics and the soccer team is pretty good," said the 6â€"foot, 155â€"pound Sola, who will study physical education. He‘ll join good friend Davor Milardovic, who‘s already down there on a basketball scholarship. In fact it was Milardovic who got the ball rolling when he put in a good word for his buddy in January. Both were schoolâ€"mates at Loyola three years ago before Sola transferred to Aquinas and Milardovic went south. Until then, Connecticut and Richmond were in the runmng for Sola‘s services. Sola gives much of the credit for his opportunity to Aquinas and coaches Hendrickse and Mike Tanetta. He has played for Toronto Croatia of the senior National Soccer League for three seasons and would have played a fourth this year but, needing to be in Siena in August, he couldn‘t commit this Custom built â€" south of Lakeshore Loaded with character amongst estates! * Original "model" home with ing. pool *.Open.concept kitchen to.family room. $259,900 year. Like Raso, he‘ll only need to take care of insurance and minor expenses. Sola will be the lone Canadian on the team. "I‘m kind of proud of that," he said. " Hendrickse says it‘s not only a coup for the two players but also for the school, which has only been in existence for three years. Raso and Sola become the school‘s first two athletes to procure U.S. soccer scholarships. "This bodes well for the other kids in the school," he said. "With Eugenio, a lot of his experience came playing with the Canadian team and NSL selects. But with John, a big part of his resume to get his scholarship was his high school experience." Sienna coach Joe Curto is comâ€" ing up next week to watch Aquinas play. "They‘ve never recruited here," said Sola. "This is tremendous for the guys coming up. There‘s a lot of great talent here." * A Courction or Furnirure Reprsseamnic OPEN SUND, The Bamn: Workshop Showroom: Markham Rd. Steeles Ave. _ 370 Denison St. E., Markham. 2932279 4752488 wm] Back in 1974, when we were building our first Woodcraft furniture, nobody talked about the "home office". But we were eager to accommodate the needs of our customers. So when enterprising members of the public began coming to us with requests for comfortable and attractive work areas for the den or living room, we were only too happy to oblige. Now that this "home office" idea is becoming a way of life, we find we have a lot of experience and some very nice, very practical soluâ€" tions. For occasional letterâ€"writing and chequebookâ€"balancing, a desk hidâ€" den in a section of a Woodcraft wall system or a secretary will be more than adequate.
