By SAL BOMMARITO Oakville Beaver Staff Residents living near the proposed Cornwallâ€"Speers Road connection raised objections to the project at Tuesday night‘s community services committee meeting. The town is planning to undertake Phase 1 of the project in 1993 â€" at a cost of $2.3â€"million â€" from Reynolds St. to west of Old Mill Road. Phase 1 involves construction of an interim threeâ€"lane road and intersection work at Reynolds, Inglehart Street, Trafalgar Road and Old Mill Road. Concerns raised over Cornwallâ€"Speers Rd. extension A threeâ€"lane roadway is proposed for Phase 1 because of the uncertainty of future site development and servicâ€" ing plans for the Kaneff, Genstar and Canadian General Tower (CGT) lands located near the road connection. In 1994, Phase 2 of the project would see the construction of a fourâ€" lane road from Reynolds St., east to Chartwell Road. Phase 3, slated for 1995, would see completion of the roadway between Reynolds and Old Mill Road and completion of a major intersection at Cornwall and Trafalgar. Chris Mant, representing about 40 residents on Inglehart, told commitâ€" tee members a temporary barrier should be placed on the street during road construction. He said by placing the barrier across the southbound, oneâ€"way street, access could still be provided for businesses at the north end of the street, while residents at the south end could still access their homes from Spruce Street. "Residents are concerned with the safety of their children, parking and commercial traffic on the street," as a result of the road construction, Mant said. Mant added that because the street is so narrow it would not be able to MANY INâ€"STOCK SAMPLES AND DISCONTINUED ITEMS PRICED TO CLEAR Solid Oak Harvest Table 4 Chairs (1 only) Country Chintz Sofa (1 Only) Chippendale Style 9â€"pce. He said only a handful of commercial properâ€" ties remain at the north end of the street. Businessman Dennis Chong, who opposed the street being blocked off, questioned whether the volume of traffic on Inglehart was a real or perâ€" ceived safety concern. "It‘s an emotionally loaded issue. There‘s an implicit suggestion (comâ€" mercial property owners on Inglehart) as human beings don‘t care about safety," Chong said. Meanwhile, members of the Trafalgar Chartwell Residents Association questioned the logic of completing the road construction prior to development in the area and completion of the town‘s Midâ€"Town Core study next year. "We have seven major developâ€" ments or redevelopment underway in the area," said Allan Street resident Russ Robertson. "We‘re getting a piecemeal look at what‘s happening in the area. We have an old estabâ€" lished neighborhood. We deserve a comprehensive plan before going ahead," Robertson said. Robertson suggested Phase 2 of the road be realigned through the CGT property to minimize the need to demolish people‘s properties. He said given the company‘s plans, "the road construcâ€" tion plans are now obsolete. We should reâ€"visit and review the whole process." Cambre said the company "would be willing to consider" a proposal to realign the road through its property. "I‘m to the point that I haven‘t got a comprehension of all the issues. I‘m uneasy about it and I get the feelâ€" ing something is being rammed by me," said Spruce Street resident Kirk Schneider. | ALL PRODUCTS IN THIS SALE ARE EITHER OVERSTOCKED, tâ€"f ‘I | [I\I DISCONTINUED, PAINTED OR RETURNED. You‘re going to find people will abandon the area because of the these issues that are coming to bear (on residents)," he said. ~ Despite the objections, however, the committee approved two public works recommendations which effecâ€" tively pave the way for work to comâ€" mence in 1993.
