His duties also involve collective bargaining, negotiations and advising on the $21â€"million players‘ pension fund. His offâ€"season career for many years has been the printing busiâ€" ness, though the local company for which he worked recently went out of business. Now, on his own, Ferrone is continuing to take printâ€" ing contracts for mailers and brochures and managing the other aspects of ‘event marketing.‘ Add all this to his charity comâ€" mitments, afterâ€"dinner speeches, and addresses to school groups, and "Whether they like me or not," he said of his peers, "I hope they respect me." They do. He has no pretensions. He likes to get his way. He jokes about being "fat" all his life. He‘s proud of his accomplishments in football though not really comfortable talking about them. He says he thinks he has earned the respect of the other playâ€" ers in the league, guys he‘s played against, and that is important. As a guard on the offensive line, slightly small by league standards, he‘s always relied on his good technical skills and smarts. Physically he can still do the job but mentally, he admitted, "the adolescence of the game," doesn‘t quite mesh with his mindset anymore. After 12 years in a league where most men survive only three, with nagging injuries like turfâ€"toe and sore joints, Dan Ferrone, local hero, is thinking about hanging up the old helmet. He added, "And its a funny thing; the harder I work, the luckier I get." He says he is truly grateful to the game which allowed him to growâ€"up with his children. And he said, "I truly believe I am fully prepared for life after footâ€" ball... I think the qualities that made me successful as a football player will be just as important in another field. "You had to be disciplined to play football (3 hours a day, 7 days a week), and maintain your studies," he said. "A lot of guys flunk out, but those who finish have a real appreciâ€" ation for just how difficult it is." "Well, you know," he said, "I have been lucky. But a coach put luck into perspective for me once. He said, ‘Luck is when opportunity meets preparation.‘ I hope I‘ve preâ€" pared myself for the opportunities that came around." "A lot of people say I‘ve just been lucky," Ferrone mused. It bothâ€" ers him. They say he‘s been lucky in football, never had a career threatenâ€" ing injury, lucky with business, lucky to have a great family. Ferrone went to Simon Fraser University in British Columbia on an athletic scholarship and studied business and history. Born and raised in Oakville, it was his first time away from home. "They gave me all the fundaâ€" mental values and discipline I needed to succeed at College and later life." Through the years he‘s had many other coaches, but not with the comâ€" mitment of these two, he said. As a kid, his parents had firm expectations of him and clear prioriâ€" ties; school was paramount, then came the partâ€"time job and finally, if there was time, sports. Dan credits his two coaches at Blakelock (where he loved basketâ€" ball more than football), Vern Lucyk and Ron Armstrong, for understanding his priorities and making it possible for him to excel. For all his boyishness this is a solid character. He makes me think his parents must have loved him very much (probably still do.) He speaks passionately about his supâ€" port system, his parents and his parâ€" entsâ€"inâ€"law, and Barb his high school sweetheart who became his wife in 1981, his friends. He grinned. "The psychologist was very good," Ferrone said, "he reâ€"enforced what my wife has been telling me for years." "Things like I‘m very outgoing and social minded," he continued and quickly, "and I like to control situations." He laughed. Coâ€"incidentally, the CFL Players‘ Association is currently establishing a "transition" program for retiring ballplayers which involves some psychological testâ€" ing. When I met him, Dan had just gone through a twoâ€"hour battery of tests and analysis as a test case. "I‘ve always wanted to be preâ€" pared for when football ended," he maintained. Certainly he gives every indication that he is content with his life and confident of his future. there is little wonder the energetic allâ€"star says, "Life is never dull."
