Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year is the American equivaâ€" lent of Portfoolio, the annual Canadian compilation which has featured Nease‘s work for the last five years. Responding to the call for entry for the first time, Nease chose from about 150 cartoons and setâ€" tled on the maximum five to subâ€" mit for consideration. "It is an American book with an American slant so I purposefully chose five cartoons with a broad appeal," explains Nease, who had help whittling down the number from Beaver assistant editor Rod Jerred. "Some Canadian issues "Great Classics" â€" the finale to the Oakville Symphony Orchestra‘s 25th Anniversary season â€" takes place May 22 and 23 at the Oakville Centre. The third cartoon â€" which involved massive, executiveâ€"level cutbacks at General Motors â€" was rewarded with the rare distinction of a full page in the book. "I like to keep my cartoons as simple as possible. That keeps them relatively easy to understand. The editors (of the book) keep that would be lost on an American audience so I chose those they could relate to." "This is the biggest exposure to a huge market that I‘ve ever had," said Nease, a political cartoonist for 14 years. Having received this recogniâ€" tion, how does the artist himself account for his success? . * s 4 a uE Speak yOU MIRCL........... .cc Question of the week.....
