In the meantime, shoppers will face some disruption on Kerr Street from July to November as workmen replace existing sewers, install under- ground wires and cables, plant trees, renovate sidewalks and put up new light standards. Graham is eager for the work to begin - and end - so that business can resume on an increasing scale. "This is the last area to receive the town's attention," she noted. "The revitalization of downtown Oakville and Bronte brought business to those two areas and the same thing will happen on Kerr." th "We can do some really unique things that may not happen in other areas of town," she said. "Maybe when the project has been completed in November. for example, we might have a celebration of different Christmas traditions of other coun- irnsti As a councillor, Graham said she has had "lots of inquiries" from busi- ness people interested in moving into the area once renovations are com- plete. According to Jill Snidal, chairper- son of the Kerr Strteet Merchants' Association, revitalization of the street has been welcomed on all sides as an investment in the future. She said the multicultural flavor of Kerr Street with its Portuguese and Italian shops will be retained and developed. tries Although the Association's 45 members endorsed plans for the street's revitalization, they have also expressed concern that disruption caused by construction could adversely affect their businesses. Snidal said customers should be assured that all the stores will be open and there will be alternative parking and traffic routes to help shoppers move through the construc- tion areas. Kerr Street Family Fun Day Saturday On May 3rd, the winning sculpture by Domenico D'Allesandro, artist/landscape architect, was chosen and D'Allesandro was presented with a cheque for $2,500. This Saturday Oakville's Town Crier will lead a ground breaking ceremony at Kerr and Cowan Avenues to recognize the com- mencement of construction which will begin in early July. Arts Council, a competition was mounted where designers and artists were invited to create a feature for the pedestrian plaza. Three finalists were chosen and awarded $500 each, to expand on their A focal point for public gather- ings and special events will be the Kerr Street Pedestrian Plaza. This plaza which will be created by the closure of Cowan Avenue will become a quiet basis with coordi- mating special surface treatments and a stage, planters, and seating areas with special lighting in a cool tree-lined square. The summer of 1993 will see big changes taking place on Kerr Street.
