The Raiders thoroughly dominatâ€" ed a good Queen Elizabeth Park Eagle squad with speed and offenâ€" sive flair in a 3â€"0 win to capture the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association title at Sherwood Forest Park. In the girls final, White Oaks defeated Oakville Trafalgar 1â€"0. Q.E.Park came into the affair with a better record than Aquinas (5â€"0â€"1 to 5â€"1â€"0) and a seasonâ€"openâ€" ing 1â€"0 win over the Raiders to But it was a much hungrier Aquinas squad it had on its hands this time. Raiders took control from the outset. They made short passes from the midfield to creative forâ€" wards like Rob Quaresma and Dan Seixreiro and Eagle defenders could do little to prevent them from havâ€" ing their way. In the meantime, the Aquinas backline, led by sweeper Nigel Seale, kept the Eagles‘ powerful offence in check. Q.E. Park had only two good chances â€" secondâ€" half shots by Justin Tasev and Ian Archimbault that were stopped by goalie Andrew Florjancic. Quaresma opened the scoring in the first half, beating QEP goalie Mark Hartley with a wellâ€"placed leftâ€"footed shot. On yet another slick play, Eric Ferreira gave Aquinas a 2â€"0 bulge early in the second half. Jeff Romao put the game out of reach with a goal midway through the second half. Aquinas coach Fernando Costa said losing to QEP earlier was the best thing that could have happened to the team. "The difference was that 1â€"0 loss," he said."We dominated teams in the preâ€"season but losing that first game brought us down to earth. Guys thought all they had to do was show up on the field, stand up and kick the ball around. "These guys wanted it (today)," he continued. "Last year we lost to Assumption (1â€"0) in the final. That was a hard loss to take. I told the guys do it for yourselves and the school." Costa said with the adept ballâ€" handling skills his team possesses, he prefers the team carry the ball in rather than play the long ball. "With the long ball in this kind of wind you have no idea what will happen. We did that last year (final) and it killed us." Eagles coach Brad Hotson said his players weren‘t getting to the ball fast enough. "We were getting beat in the middle and they took control of the ball. We might have been a little overâ€"anxious and their defence is really strong." White Oaks girls, meanwhile, capped a remarkable turnaround season Tuesday with their win over Oakville Trafaloar. Wildcats were patient enough offensively to get the game‘s only goal with about eight minutes left in regulation time as Janet Sury scored off a loose scramble. "We didn‘t want it (game) to go into overtime kicks," said White Oaks coâ€"coach Marie Guest. "We had a lot of opportunities. I‘m glad we were able to capitalize." An influx of good Grade 9 talent was key in this year‘s about face. Last year the team managed only to tie one game and lose five. This year the team finished at 5â€"1â€"0. Wildcats goalie Karry Miles says after last season‘s tough times, experiencing prosperity was upliftâ€" ing for veterans like herself, Karen Christie and Jill Henderson.
