A weekly series of letters home from Sarah Crothall, a grade 12 student from Oakville current! spending 10 months spending 10 months + aboard the S/Y Concordia visiting 40 ports of call on 4 continents! Dear Oakville: In Punta Norte, we saw sea lions. At this time of year there were not many males left, just females and their young. We watched a killer whale circling offâ€"shore. At this time of year killer whales use the tide and waves to come right up onto the beach to grab young sea lion pups. One our first day in Puerto Madryn, Argentina we set out early for a tour of Peninsula Valdes. The landscape was flat and the vegetation scarce, nothing more than scrub. On the way we saw herds of guanacos, one of the types of native IHama. Guanacos are totally wild and cannot be domesticated. In this same region we observed large birds which looked like emus. At Caleta Valdes, we watched elephant seals. They moved like huge caterpillars and were amusing to watch. Both the sea lions and elephant seals astounded us with their size. Male sea lions are 2.3 meters long and weigh about 200 kilograms. Male elephant seals are 5 metres long and weight about 2.5 tons! That evening we were invited to a disco where we met local students. Initially we had quite a problem with the language barrier, but our months on Class Afloat have made us good at communicating with little or no knowledge of the local language. The following day we all called in a Puerto Madryn once more and stocked up on hot chocolate before we set sail for the Straits of Magellan at the bottom of South America. Puerto Madryn in the Southern Hemisphere is at the same latitude as Christchurch, New Zealand where I was bom, and quite chilly in the early autumn, not much less so than Oakville‘s early fall weather. As we sail even further south, with the Southern Hemisphere winter advancing, hot chocolate is becoming more popular than ice cream when we dock. Our Oakville head office staff, branch staff and associates wish Sarah more memorable adventures, and continu sailing. The staff at Royal Bank wish Sarah all the best on her exciting and educational voyage. ..... At the same time, he said it was necessary to hold Wilson accountable for his actions while keeping in mind the impact of this matter on his family. * grabbajabba oakville * *« 116 Thomas Street + Downtown Oakville « + 844â€"1943 â€" for 1993 "If you love coffee, this Investment Group Wishing you smooth sailing throughout your travels Italian Specialties At Truly Modest Prices With Warm Friendly Service 165 Cross Avenue 842â€"1581 Oakville is the place for you." This message involved a police investigaâ€" tion into letters that alleged a coverup by senior officers of a wife assault by a junior officer. Upon learning police were about to obtain an original copy of the letter (two were sent) and use forensic means to establish its author, Wilson â€" believing his wife may have written it â€" called Johnson and left a message imploring her to destroy it. Johnson immediately turned the tape over to police. On Friday, after Kivell said there would be finding of guilt in the case, Inspector Tony Repa said the sentence must be assessed on three fronts: its impact on Wilson himself, other police officers and the public. Both Wilson‘s lawyer Paul Stunt and the prosecution agreed that his actions were out of character and that the punishment should be such that the officer could return to his job as soon as possible. The humiliation of court appearances and public scrutiny was enough, they said. "We have a duty to ensure the pubâ€" lic understands we can control the behavior of our officers," said Repa. Recognizing the humiliation Wilson has endured, Repa â€" who called for "progressive discipline" â€" * Loblaws « Food City » Canadian Tire * Kmart « AP * Ultra Mart * Miracle Mart + BiWay « The Bay * Super Centre * Longo‘s * Ashbrook‘s *1.G.A. + Aikenheads * Shakras Partial Delivery [E OAKVT OAKVILLE Tel: 845â€"9742 or 845â€"3824 Regarding delivery problems (See ‘Officer‘ page 5)
