Those high winter heating bills are still coming in and you've decided it's decided it's time to make your house more energy-efficient - and boost your prospects for future prosperity - by adding insulation to the attic, basement and walls. Here are some tips from Energy, Mines and Resources Canada (EMR) for home insulators: - Follow basic safety precautions! Wear steel-teed boots (especially in the attic where loose nails are a potential hazard), gloves, goggles, face masks and long sleeved clothing that is tight- fitting around the ankles and wrists. Make sure the area you‘re insulating is well ventilated. - Use insulation that is suitable for the area you are insulting. It's a good idea to get a "How To" book which gives you a step-by-step approach to insulating. One example of such a pub- lication is EMR's "Consumer's Guide to Keeping the Heat In." It is a free, lOO-page book that tells you about everything from the materials to use to how to insulate roofs, attics. basements and walls. Pitfalls to avoid when insulating - Don't forget the air-vapour barrier when you install insulation. In the winter, this moisture forms ice, and will melt during warmer weather. It then can drip on the insulation, damage your ceiling, and if severe enough, start rot and mildew. The same is true for your walls. - When insulating foundation walls with batt or blanket insulation, install a moisture barrier first, from the ground level down. - Ensure proper clearances when insulating around chimneys and recessed lighting fixtures. If improper- ly insulated, it could cause a heat build-up, which could lead to a fire. The insulation itself may not burn, but the materials around it could. - One common mistake of over- Suite Square ft PH the Ix Built there F"----'--." t " _4 1ke advanta IW' )vmum entoy Bleacht have ab: IA " q \\ Look at the Savings! For example, don't cover air vents when insulating an attic. -- Keep any electrical wiring or pipes on the warm side of the insula- tion. If these wires or pipes go through the air-vapour barrier, be sure to seal the barrier to them. - Remember thermal bridging! Don't just fill in the spaces between joists: insulate over joists. If possible, insulate over studs in exterior walls. - When insulating a basement, the insulation is installed in two layers. The first is a horizontal layer between the studs and the wall. It is very impor- tant that the insulation is tight against the foundation wall. Next, install a layer snugly, vertically between the studs. Remember that insulation helps keep the heat in your home in the win- ter, but it also helps keep it out during the summer. "A well-insulated home will be cooler in the summer. It also helps to cut down on noise. Whatever the rea- son, insulating and sealing your home contributes to energy savings and that's good for your pocket book and for the environment," says Jacques Brodeur, Senior Marketing and Information Officer at EMR.
