A man who‘s helped inspire juvenile delinquents become career artists. Sixtyâ€"fiveâ€"yearâ€"old Hanna Watson is all that â€" and more. . He was honored last Friday by staff at Oakville‘s Syl Apps Campus of the Thistletown Correctional Centre as he closed the door on his 43â€"year educaâ€" tion career and opened the door to retirement. *A teacher never retires, they only lose their class," joked one of Watson‘s colleagues during Watson‘s farewell party. Born in Egypt, Watson began teaching high school in Cairo at the tender age of 18. No formal requirement was necessary for teaching but Watson was dedicated. He headed back to university at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon to study history and education. At age 24, Watson became a principal and raised his young family. By age .. 30, he was a superintendent of 16 schools spread across the Fayum District, a geographic district of an oasis. "It was like a big oasis in the desert made up of many towns and cittes," ... said Watson, describing it as an Egyptian province. In 1964, Watson looked to Canada as a land of opportunity for his family. ] He relocated his family to Oshawa and he himself took a job at the Crystal _ Beach Public School. Shortly after he applied for a job at Kawartha Lakes Training School in y Lindsay, Ontario and â€" without fully realizing that a training school in Canada was somewhat different that what‘s known by that name in Egypt â€" he began ï¬ n artist. Described as energetic, always on the move, totally organized and consisâ€" tently conscientious, Watson was given verbal tributes and gifts from individuâ€" als, staff groups, union representatives and the Halton Board of Education. "Hanna is a skilled artist. He passed on his love of art to many students over the years and many pursued a career in the arts," said Jacobs. "I‘m really overwhelmed.
