Choristers hold classes Jurassic Park is a great summer reading book for both teenagers and adults, whether you see the movie or not. (The book is always better). The Trillium Chorus of Sweet Adelines International is offering six free vocal lessons as an introduction to acappella choral singing. The classes will appeal to women who love to sing, want to develop their vocal talents and are eager to try out their performing skills. They will be taught the technical aspects of ringâ€" ing chords in fourâ€"part barbershop harmony and will discover how the visual presentation enhances the musiâ€" cal product. Of course, it is a dinosaur, and as the characters in the story battle the disasters at Jurassic Park, the readâ€" ers know that even larger disasters are looming: the dinosaurs have already reached the mainland and are learning to survive. As Crichton‘s philospherâ€"scientist, Ian Malcolm warns, we shouldn‘t be worrying about destroying the planâ€" et, we should be worrying about destroying ourselves. I haven‘t seen the movie (the book was scary enough for me) but some of the most fascinating parts of the book simply won‘t translate to the screen. The novel begins with some children in South America who have been bitten by mysterious lizards, and the efforts of doctors and others to find out what has hapâ€" pened to them. When someone sugâ€" gests that the lizard could be a dinosaur, noâ€"one else will even conâ€" sider that possibility. The vocal classes are free, but a $30 fee for course materials will be collected on the first night. Classes begin Sept. 15th at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church. Space is limited so early registration is advised. While the movie is grabbing all the headlines (and making milâ€" lions), I‘d like to remind people that Jurassic Park was a book first (recently reissued in paperback). My 12â€"yearâ€"old son found the book a month or so before the movie was released and spent many nights completely engrossed in the story. After he saw the film, we had a long discussion about how it differed from the book. The sixâ€"week program is very structured and the underlying hope is that participants will become so hooked, they will want to stay with Trillium. For more information, call 8§44â€"3778.
