Collins, who has lived in downtown ille for some 24 years (after short stops in Australia and Colorado), adds, T‘ve made a lot friends here in Bronte (through Harbour Craft). Sometimes, if Beople have problems â€" sometimes if tyou ve got something good to share â€" it‘s rather nice they feel that this is a plaoe they can come to." _ Like her home, she says, her shop 1$ a little messy. "But I know exactly where everyâ€" ‘thing is... because I bought it, I priced it, and I put it where it is." She does allow, however, that her system may be a teensyâ€"bit hard on the other girls who work here. Nevertheless, she laughs and explains, most people seem to like it that way. "‘They like fossicking around," she says. (Say what? To fossick", accordâ€" ing to Webster, "to prospect or search, as for gold; to search about, rummage, to seek out." A lovely word.) A typical day for the shopkeeper starts at about 7:15 a.m. when she heads up to her suppliers on Tompkins Road; she can usually hit a couple before turnâ€" ing back to Bronte and opening her Mioors at 9:30 a.m. "It usually starts right away, people dropping in and calling about the most outrageous things," she says cheerfully. There is seldom a dull moment. If there is an evening craft class (which there is three nights a week from September to June), Collins will stay to e care of their needs before heading ome. It makes a long day, but a satisfyâ€" ing one. She is in her element here, quite apart from the folk art and the crafts. Collins has an innate respect for her clients‘ needs, regardless of their station. It translates into something very special; she shines. Oddly, she maintains, it has fiot always been thus. ""No, I never would have said so," she says. "In fact, I think I lived under a bit of a shadow before. Then I realized just how much I could enjoy meeting people in my place." And being a part of the craft scene. "It is fun to walk into a craft class and hear this bunch of women talking and laughing; women who didn‘t know each other at all before it began. They become very close sometimes and rely on each other." The bonus, according to the shopâ€" keeper, ‘‘People come into the store and SCuIgU QNO. WIIl NOL leak.
