No, it‘s not asparagus, potato salad or beer, but it is edible. It‘s baking soda, that same harmless and inexpensive product that‘s used for everyâ€" thing from odor absorption in homes, to toothpaste, to a feed supplement to tame the sensitive stomachs of cattle. And though it has the gentle texture of flour, it turns out baking soda also becomes an excellent blasting material when applied under moderate pressure. Church and Dwight Co. â€" the same comâ€" pany responsible for producing Arm Hammer brand baking soda â€"also invented the Armex/Accustrip cleaning system which uses baking soda to remove nearly any unwanted coating from most surfaces. Technical Barrier Systems Inc. (TBS), an Oakvilleâ€"based distributor of Accustrip recently demonstrated the equipment at The Shane Banfield requires very little protection, only a painter‘s mask, goggles and earplugs, to demonstrate blasting equipment which uses baking soda to remove rust, paint, decals and dirt from most surfaces. "The beauty of Accustrip is that you don‘t need to mask rubber, glass or other delicate materials before starting the job," explained TBS regional manager Ken Eaton. "Also, the baking soda acts as a rust inhibitor, so you don‘t have to reâ€"paint right away. Other advantages of the Accustrip sysâ€" tem include that it is safer to use, creates less landfill waste and can be used onâ€"site with little effect on normal plant operation. Paint Shoppe owner Ted Banfield said he was initially skeptical that the common household product could replace convenâ€" tional sandblasting equipment in his shop. "I really didn‘t believe it would work," he said. After several demonstrations of how Accustrip can remove unwanted rust, paint, dirt, decals and grime without harming the underlying metal or adjacent materials like rubber or glass, Banfield was sold. ‘"With the grit of silica sand, we have to replace expensive air equipment regularly because of wear and need to dispose of tons of sand every year," the Brampton businessâ€" man said. Accustrip uses two forms of baking soda or "blast medias." The first is called mainteâ€" nance formula and is used to clean metal surfaces and remove paint from aluminum, fibreglass and other soft bases. It can be used in virtually any work environment. The profile formula, meanwhile, strips corrosion and mill scale down to white metal. However, since it can cause sparking, the profile formula should not be used in potentially explosive or flammable areas. Since both blast media are 90% water soluble and harmless to the environment, waste levels are dramatically reduced and substantial savings can be realized. Before Accustrip, Paint Shoppe employâ€" ees â€" working in spray booths large enough to park heavy equipment â€" had to don gloves and a full face helmet complete with an air supply to protect them from the neeâ€" dleâ€"like attack of sand under pressure. When Banfield‘s son Shane recently demonstrated the system, he needed only a painter‘s mask, goggles and ear plugs. In addition to all the secondary advanâ€" tages, Accustrip is simply a more efficient way to get the job done, Eaton concludes. In most cases there‘s little plant disrupâ€" tion and the time to complete a job is draâ€" matically reduced when parts can be cleaned onâ€"site. The Accustrip applicator can be purâ€" chased through TBS for about $20,000 and requires a compressor capable of feeding air at the rate of 250 cubic feet per minute. The blast media is sold at $1.32 per kiloâ€" gram or 60 cents a pound. MEN‘S WOMEN‘S GRUNGE Doc. Martin Look â€" A â€" Likes MEN‘S WOMEN‘S i [ Regular Price
