Figures just released by the Oakville, Milton and District Real Estate Board show that August sales rose 10% over the same period a year ago and the dollar volume of sales was up 12% over August 1992. Everything is looking up for the Oakville area real estate market. "The numbers this month are a good sign and they could indicate that consumer confidence is starting to return to the real estate market," said OREB pres. Richard Weima. "Fewer new listings have been added to the supply of houses for sale in our area this year and the supply is down about 10% over last year," said Weima. Weima said the continuation of low mortgage rates and the Ontario Real Estate Association‘s new Job Loss Mortgage Insurance program, are attracting more buyers to the marketplace. "Interest rates are still low, prices are very stable, the government‘s five per cent down program has been extended and the new Job Loss Insurance Program should provide people with the job security that has, up to now, been lacking in the economy," said Weima. "The insurance covers up to $2,500 in monthly payments for up to 12 months." Of the homes sold last month, 37% were priced between $150,000â€"$200,000 with 31% falling into the $200,000â€" $300,000 range. Houses in the $300,000â€" $400,000 made up 13% of the total while 5% of homes sold were above the $400,000 mark. Of the remainder, 15% of homes sold were priced less than $150,000. Dividing the sales into areas, 226 homes were sold last month, with 171 sales in Oakville and 24 in Milton. This compares with 153 Oakville sales and 25 Milton sales in August of last year.
