Westlake | published by The Mysterious Press 1993 .Donald Westlake is best known for his humorous crime novels about a gang of crooks who plan elaborate capers and invariably mess up. His sense of humor‘is still apparent in this very different novel that comâ€" bines suspense with â€" and this may seem like an unusual combiâ€" nation â€" religion. This is not a traditional reliâ€" gious mystery like the Father Koesler books and others featurâ€" ing clerical detectives. The very first character we meet in "Humans" is not a human at all, but an angel. His name is Ananayel, and he is summoned by God to fulfill an errand. 4 God, it appears, is tired of humans. They‘re not following his plan, and He‘s decided to end the world. Ananayel‘s task is to make it happen. He starts in New York City, but, of course, global destruction requires a broader network, so his journeys take him to China, to Brazil, to the hospital where one of the firemen injured at Chernobyl lives, and he begins the process of ending our world. But God‘s plans, as usual, do not go unopposed. If God wants the world destroyed, then Someone Else wants to prevent it. This is a story with more depth to it than Westlake‘s previous books, but he retains his flair for storytelling and lets the deeper meanings express themselves indirectly.
