JOHN VAIL Associate Broker 845â€"9900 CENTURY 21 MILLER Real Estate Limited Realtor * (Loam Paul Marcotte, president of Bourbon Coffee, waits for a taste test from client Azod Zarin of Cinnamon Bakery. Over $16 million in sales in 1993 Thanks To You By BARB JOY Oakville Beaver Staff ver 200 customers of Bourbon Coffee Company turged out recently to learn how the Oakville plant makes coffee. Basically, it was a roast. For that‘s what the company does.: According to its director of sales, Bruce Andrew, Bourbon Coffee is one of a few coffee roasters in the province. It buys its green coffee beans from growers and distributors in coffeeâ€"growing countries such as Brazil, roasts it, grinds it and packages it 338â€"9000 "FOR YOUR NEXT MOVE, CALL TODAY" OPEN HOUSES FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1993 PAGE 22 for sale to the province‘s restaurants, hotels and institutions. But there‘s "a little bit of retail" thrown in for good measure. Among its customers, the company lists. Loblaws, Food City and Tim Hortons. In all, Andrew said it has 4,000 customers in Ontario serving or selling 72 varieties of Bourbon coffee. "Every fourth cup of coffee in Canada is manufactured by us," said Andrew. "A lot of local people drink our coffee." @®nce ground, the coffee is packaged in various sizes â€" tins, valve bags or in preâ€" measured small packages for filters. The 40,000 squareâ€"foot plant in the Winston Industrial Park and its 75 employees have been processing raw coffee beans since November, 1989 when it was known as Excelso Coffee. A few months later, Kraft General Foods bought it and its name changed to Bourbon Coffee to underline the gourmet roasting of the beans. The company keeps a close eye on the beans it buys from foreign coffee growers. Occasionally, it has to warn them about leaves, twigs and other foreign material in the burlap bags of beans it receives from some growers who like to add a little weight of their own. "*We even got batches of corn coming in so we stopped buying from that grower," said Andrew. He noted that coffee consumption has an annual decline of about 1/3% a year which he attributed largely to healthâ€"conscious young people who have dropped coffeeâ€"drinking in favor of milk and juices. On the other hand, "kids who get hooked on coke often switch to coffee later on" to maintain their caffeine intake. "Yes, caffeine is a drug and can be addictive," he candidly stated. "But tea has as much caffeine in it. Cola has caffeine, although I don‘t know how its content compares to coffee." Another aspect of the coffee industry is decaffeinted coffee, once generally considered "healthier" coffee. However, Andrew said it has recently acquired a bad reputation, stemming from the public‘s suspicions of the chemical process whereby caffeine is extracted from coffee. But there are other ways of doing it. Bourbon Coffee uses "the natural method." "We inject coffee with carbon dioxide which drives the caffeine out," he said. "It‘s the same method they use when making sparkling mineral water and it‘s relatively safe." ROYAL LEPAGE Emm i)) 141 11 Le meRoa! deSeMces Home Maich #9300952 $214,000 BACKS ONTO 14 MI.
