He was happy to do it. After all, he had worked with the United Way as a volunteer for many years. What betâ€" ter way to climax his career than with an organization he deeply revered? One thing led to another and almost four years later, he is still occupying an office on Chisholm Street. According to Deyell, the camâ€" paign goals have grown constantly over the years from under $1â€"million to almost $2â€"million. This year‘s goal is a whopping Mail to: Jade Gardens 5558 Trafaigar Rd. Hornby, Ontario LOP 1E0 (878â€"0722) Age: MaAcicr ever need. It‘s a fullâ€"time job, 12 months of the year, for the executive director and his staff of four, not only raising funds, but allocating funds and constantly reviewing proâ€" cedures and reporting to the 25â€" member board of directors. Deyell said it was a change movâ€" ing from the retail side of the profitâ€" driven agricultural coâ€"operative to a nonâ€"profit organization such as the United Way, but not as much of a change as you might think. "I believe," heâ€"explained, "that even in the nonâ€"profit sector we have to be bottom line oriented. We‘ve got to operate as a successful business would." "The bottom line with the United Way is the raising of funds. Our donors are our customers. We‘ve got to keep our customers walking through our doors â€" wanting to give to the United Way â€" because it‘s the ‘right‘ thing to do." As a good businessman, he also knows the value of efficiency in an operation and responsibility to cusâ€" tomers. No one wants to give money for administration expenses, he pointed out. "Last year, we kept our campaign costs down to 11.4%," he said, "which means 88.6% went directly to the various service agencies." This was largely made possible by the 1,000 dedicated volunteers in the community. They are the key to the United Way‘s success and also to you money. Call, Make yourself proud. If you are located within the new 905 area code you will need new business stationary, and this is a great time to improve your image. Call, Make Ma says you have to change aArtipic Communications Inc. 416â€"767â€"4258 Deyell‘s success as a leader. "You have to surround yourself with the best people you can find," he said. "We do that. We think peoâ€" ple want to be on a winning team and we are that." A tireless team leader, Deyell is not stingy with his praise. Nor is he above doing whatever tasks need to be done. A personable guy who takes his job quite personally; he is (did we mention?), goalâ€"oriented and driven to success. While his primary concerns are in the workplace trying to convince people to give on the payâ€"roll deduction plan (58% of United Way Oakville‘s funds come from workplace .campaigns), he has also been known to stuff envelopes and answer telephones. Looking back, would he have done anything differently? He laughed. "Raised more money maybe." And then more thoughtfully, "Well, maybe we have tried to bring too many new initratives along too quickly. Maybe, we have bitten off a little more than we can chew. Not sure." On balance, however, he is thrilled with the response of the community. Though, of course, he said, there was still plenty of potential for growth. For example, the per capita United Way gift in Windsor, Ontario was $27 last year, while Oakville‘s was only about $15. "The United Way is all about building community; establishing strong partnerships with all sector of the community. We know that govâ€" ernment money is going to continue to dry up, so we have to find ways to work together even more efficientâ€" ly.” Deyell had this advice for his sucâ€" cessor to be named before the end of the year. "It is absolutely vital for the United Way to remain volunteer driven," Deyell added. "It is how the community can be served best; the strength of our organization is deterâ€" mined by the quality of our volunâ€" teers. This is how it should be." In this week‘s ‘The Sale‘ flyer, the ‘Gourmet Magic‘ Kettle featured on page 1 is not a whistling kettle as stated in the copy. It is selling at $12.97, not $6.97.
