Pop can tab i collection lfor hospital By SHELLY SANDERS GREER Special to the Beaver f Students at Sheridan Public School are hoping to turn 4,000 pounds of pop tabs into a paediatric chair bed for Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Since the beginning of the school year, the 450 students at the school have been collecting tabs and at this point, have 500 pounds. By June, vice principal Trish Gordon expects they will be halfway there. with 2.000 pounds. "The school is very involved in environmental issues," Gordon explains. "Then we found out that pop tabs could by recycled by a place in Hamilton. So we have set-up a big container in the hallways of the school and the environmental club. The amount of tabs needed seemed feasible, and it will help chil- dren. In addition, Gordon says this is something the hospital needs. The aim is to raise $4,000 from the sale of 350 tickets at $25 each, allowing people to sample SportDomes' facilities (batting cages, driving range and miniature golf), enjoy a buffet dinner, and place bids for unusual auction items. "We hope our fast fundraiser will be successful and become an annual event," said John Burkus, chairman of the St. John Ambulance. "Our presence is up dramatically over last year," said Burkus, attribut- ing the increased interest in the St. John Ambulance to last year's hiring of executive director Mary Ann Hull, and its move to 466 Morden Rd., Ste. 201. Theevent, from 6 pm. to mid- night, will feature door prizes and a silent auction, both for such items as a Sony ghettoblaster, restaurant gift certificates, engraved stationary, four hours of business consulting, clothing, sports memorabilia, and free income tax services.
