But the need for blood never takes a holiday. Each weekday 5,000 people must give blood or the Red Cross to meet the requirements of Canadians hospi- tals. It's especially important for patients who, on an ongoing basis, need to receive platelets, a blood component that prevents life-threatening bleeding. Because platelets have a brief storage life, the Red Cross must continously collect a sufficient amount of blood. The Oakville Red Cross is asking people to put ther Gift of Life on their gift-giving list this Christmas. December is a diffi- cult time for the Red Cross to collect blood. People are away or too busy with holiday festivities and have less time to donate. Healthy individuals aged 17 to 70 are encouraged to attend a blood donor clinic this month to make the holiday season brighter tor patients. Oakville has two upcoming clinics in December: Dec. 23rd at Towne Chev-Olds. Trafalgar Road, 1:30 to 8 p.m.; Dec. 30th. Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, Third Line, 2 to 8 p.m.; and one next month, Jan let at the River Oaks Recreation Centre, Sixth Line, 1 to 8 pan.
