He had dreams. He had a life to live. He was the best son, brother and friend anybody could ever want. Tuesday evening, the 14â€"ygarâ€"old Blakelock high school student died after being struck by a car as he crossed Dorval Drive north of the QEW. Oakville Beaver Staff The colder the weather, the warmer Lake Ontario must feel. This year, for a third time in Oakville, the Burloak Polar Bears plan to take their 9th annual plunge into the frigid lake off Coronation Park on New Year‘s Day, Jan. 1st. By WILMA BLOKHUIS Last year 139 brave souls ran into Lake Ontario, making the Burloak Polar Bears the largest club of its kind in Eastern Canada. And this year, 150 particâ€" ipants are expected to take the plunge, says Trent Courage, who with his brother Todd Courage, organize the annual event. * "It‘s looking pretty cold," says Trent. "Hopefully it will warm up a bit so we can entice a few more people." By ‘warming up," hbe means temperatures above 0°Celsius! "Anything that flutters slightly above 0°Celsius is considâ€" ered warm, and if that happens, we could get a couple hundred polar dipâ€" _ Last year, the temperature was â€"6°%Celsius with a windchill of â€"21°Celsius, "but two years ago, (when 125 people dipped) it was warmer. If the air temâ€" perature is (above freezing), and we have a nice sunny day, then more people Halton Regional Police say no charges will be laid in (See Bears‘ page 2) Trafalgar Memorial Hospital has increased the frequency of its security rounds in the obstetrics department. "We do have security that make the rounds which include the obstetrics department," said OTMH President connection with the accident A few of Matt‘s friends gathered in a local restaurant Wednesday to talk about the tragic death of their buddy. The shock hadn‘t even begun to wear off. The boys said Matt was up at the Dorval Drive plazas that night to see a movie and visit a stereo shop, because he liked music. "He was always smiling. He was a good guy with a great sense of humor (See ‘Teenager‘ page 4) and CEO Dieter Kuntz. "We have beefed up the frequency of the rounds." When news of the abduction filâ€" tered through the ranks at OTMH, ongoing security measures were reinâ€" forced, said Kuntz. Although obstetrics nurses are supâ€" posed to identify themselves to the mother and father on a regular basis, the abduction heightened the necessiâ€" ty for this and they were asked "to be more conscientious so that parents know exactly who the caregivers are." Several years ago, OTMH introâ€" duced the roomingâ€"in concept where babies and moms are together in the room. Any strangers found wandering in the rooms or where they don‘t belong, are to be reported to the nursâ€" ing staff at once, said Kuntz. One doesn‘t think of a newborn being abducted from a hospital nursâ€" ery but that‘s exactly what happened recently at Joseph Brant and over the years at other medical institutions When one thinks of a ‘missing‘ patient, one tends to think of an elderâ€" ly person afflicted with Alzheimer‘s who wanders off the hospital grounds.
