After 22 years with the Royal Bank, he wanted out. He turned down a new job offer with the bank, "in the exact area where I always wanted to work," because the position was in Toronto, not Oakville. Gould had grown tired of the comâ€" muting, opting instead for the United Way job closer to home. The father of 12â€"yearâ€"old twins, Jason and Jeremy, wanted to work locally, thus allowing him to be more accessible to his sons. Both, over the past few years, have become heavily involved in local sports, mainly hockey and baseball plus some soccer and swimming In a way, Gould seems to be switching roles with his wife Jenny, area manager for Oakville and Milton with the Royal Bank until her promoâ€" tion as manager of operations and serâ€" vice delivery for Toronto and district since September. Now she, last year‘s campaign chair for the Oakville United Way, commutes to Toronto. In his more than two decades with the Royal, Gould has moved 14 times while working his way up through the ranks from management training through branch management. Over the years, he moved back and forth from New Brunswick, where he was raised, to Montreal and Toronto. For the past decade, while specializing in Endowment fund at $135,000 The Oakville United Way‘s endowment fund has reached the $135,000 mark. The fund, which is separate from the United Way‘s regular camâ€" paign, is a responsibility of the Planned Giving Committee. Judy Alexander, committee chair, says that the two major contributions to the fund came from grants from local family foundations. One grant was for $50,000 and the second for $5,000. Both grants were conditional upon the community raising a matching amount during 1993. The additional funds came from bequests from estates, memorial contriâ€" butions, specified donations and proceeds from community events. "Our main donors in the planned giving area are people who have been long term residents of the town," says Alexander. "They have chosen to live in Oakville because of the town‘s special qualities and we feel that they will see the Endowment Fund as a means of helping maintain Oakville‘s quality of life." According to Alexander the long term objective is to establish a $2 milâ€" lion fund which will be kept intact. Interest will be used to maintain financâ€" ing of the 34 organizations which are supported by the United Way should the annual fundâ€"raising drive fall short in any year. "I wanted to make a lifestyle change," said Gould of his decision to leave the bank. "I decided I had comâ€" muted to Toronto long enough, and instead want to work in Oakville." He joined the Oakville United Way in June, a week after leaving the Royal, as an ‘understudy‘ doing the job of a campaign manager while at the same time training to take over from retirâ€" ing executive director Bill Deyell, who had come out of retirement three years ago to guide the local umbrella fundraising organization. Gould‘s position became effective Jan. 1st. "We liked Oakville the best," Gould says of his many moves. ~_"When we came back to Ontario it wasn‘t a question of where we would live in Ontario, but where we would live in Oakville. Here we‘re not part of the Metropolitan Toronto environâ€" ment, but close enough to what the city has to offer." He first lived in Oakville 18 years ago. Gould said he would continue to build upon the success of the United Way‘s fundraising activities in Oakville, adding the 1993 campaign will close Jan. 17th at $1.833 million, $67,000 under the $1.9 million goal. The United Way helps fund 34 local social service agencies. "The campaign has grown from year to year at a double digit rate, and this will continue," said Gould. Double digit increases are n unreasonable in Oakville while sti has a relatively healthy industry bas thanks to Ford. "Ford is enjoying a good econo ic environment and this is bei shared by local industries that suppo Ford. As long as Ford stays health we‘ll continue to have a healthy ronment in local business." Gould added Oakville has a ‘comfortable place" to locate bus ness, as "land and building costs still reasonable and they can g employees who don‘t require extraordinarily high wage becaud they don‘t have to commute." A retirement reception will be hel for Deyell tomorrow. Sale on now untill Saturday, January 29. In addition, any tables and chairs ordered during this week will be tax free.
