By KATHRYN KATES Special to the Beaver It‘s a long journey back in time from present day North York‘s Leah Posluns Theatre, to Anatevka, a small village in Russia in 1905, the setting for the hit musical Fiddler on the Roof. Oakville‘s Sheridan College can boast of two faculty members whose talents made this production believable, music director John Karr and costume designer David Juby. "This program has given me the opportunity to keep on top of curâ€" rent musicals because the students are constantly bringing in new repertoire. The students are great," enthuses Karr. Karr has been working at the colâ€" lege as a vocal coach for the musiâ€" cal theatre program since 1988. Fiddler on the Roof is Karr‘s 12th production spanning nine years with the Leah Posluns Theatre Company as musical director and pianist. Karr is a going concern because, in addition to his work at Sheridan and Leah Posluns Theatre, his credâ€" its include productions at the Huron Country Playhouse, Persephone Theatre, The Thousand Islands Playhouse, Muskoka and Drayton Festivals and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Toronto at U of Ts Hart House. Juby was trained as a fashion designer. Seven years ago on a dare from a friend, he applied to Sheridan College as resident cosâ€" tume designer and history and When Reva Stemn, artistic direcâ€" tor of the Leah Posluns Theatre put out the call for a costume designer, Karr didn‘t hesitate to recommend fellow Sheridan College coâ€"worker David Juby. Karr says Juby is terrifâ€" ic. "He truly designs for the perâ€" son... making the actor look great. His costumes for Anything Goes at the college last year were amazing," adds Karr. The feeling is mutual, Juby has formed a close business relationship with Karr.and has a lot of respect for the musician‘s talent. design teacher for the theatrical proâ€" gram. Much to his amazement this theatre novice was hired. Juby considers the college the best technical theatrical school in Canada. He feels the Oakville camâ€" pus is conveniently situated in close proximity to the professional theâ€" atres in Toronto. Many of the stuâ€" dents come from solid high school theatrical programs in Oakville and Burlineton. Discussing Fiddler on the Roof, Juby says, "Although the show is set in 1905, it almost surpasses a period because the characters may have had one new piece of apparel and the rest of their clothes were handâ€"meâ€"downs. This hard working Jewish community in Russia‘s preâ€" revolutionary period were a selfâ€" sufficient part of society, trying to keep far away from the ruling Russians." He used sepia (earthy) tones for the Jewish villagers and dressed the Russian‘s in aggressive colors demonstrating their power. IAVIY 4TTIAMV Fiddler was a great experience for the Oakville resident. Leah Posluns‘ Stern has already invited Juby back for next season. In the meantime Juby and his students‘ costumes can be seen at Sheridan College‘s modern adaptation of the Greek comedy, The Birds, to April 30th.
