For Bruce West, piloting Walâ€"Mart ulttmate challenge for retail executive ruce West has lived in southâ€" Beast Oakville with his wife, Paulette, and two sons, Peter and Michael, for about 10 years now. He loves the town, he says. His chilâ€" dren went to school here. He likes to shop on Lakeshore Road and get his hair cut at Barbarossa. He plays tennis at the Oakville Club, even belongs to the Rotary. He‘s fully committed to life here, in for the long haul, he says. "I‘ve been to just about every town of 5,000 or more in this country," he‘s been known to boast, "including the territories. There is not a finer place to live than Oakville." So, what is wrong with this picâ€" ture? For one thing, the vanity plates on his BMW read "WALâ€"MRT", a trenchant reminder of his recent career move, from top dog at Woolco Canada to the presidency of Walâ€" Mart, Canada. It is no exaggeration to say the sudden entry of the giant American discounter into the true north (by value of a U.S.$300â€"million buyâ€"out of 122 Woolco stores) has sent chills of apprehension through the hearts of many struggling Canadians retailers. It‘s a done deal, though, as of We specialize in allergyâ€"free products! Natural Needs carries Allergenâ€"Proof slipcovers, vitamins and supplements that are hypoallergenic and allâ€"natural foods. Renovations have begun already on all 26 stores in southern Ontario. West predicted Oakville‘s own Walâ€"Mart would be fully conâ€" verted by midâ€"summer, and two addiâ€" tional sites for new stores have been selected, in Barrie and Belleville. Walâ€" Mart is famous for bringing discount prices to small town America â€" amongst other things. Question: is the new president and CEO having any fun? "Absolutely," he grinned. "Sure I am. Because I have an opportunity to be with something that is growing. im. -f%: 41‘9, [ dl'" 795 o oi And there isn‘t much doubt we will grow." Last year Walâ€"Mart â€" the biggest retailer in the world â€" grossed about $67â€"billion in the United States alone. West suggested the company would reach $100â€"billion by 1995. "Staggering, isn‘t it?" he said rhetorically. "We are creating a lot of jobs with the renovations," the president said, "plumbers and tilers, electricians, and dryâ€"wallers, but the most exciting part is happening with our own people."
