The scores are followed by the most valuable player for the team. Scoreboard Former junior Canadian triathlon team member Martin Rydlo just graduated from Queen‘s University this spring with a degree in mechanical engineering and already has a job awaiting him in September as a brand manager for Proctor and Gamble in Toronto. But there‘s still one major piece of unfinâ€" ished business left for the Appleby College graduate â€" the World University Triathlon Championships in Nantes, France this September. Two Oakville athletes, between themselves, manâ€" aged half a dozen trips to the medal podium at Sunday‘s Paris canoeâ€"kayak world cup regatta. Larry Cain won gold in the 1,000 metre, twoâ€"man canoe race and silver in the 500 metre twoâ€"man canoe race. The move allows Ireland, who eventualâ€" ly hopes to work his way into the major junior league to further expand his coaching resume and to also coach a considerable distance closer to his home, explained Walker. Rydlo has been a key force in organizing Canada‘s entry into the competition, and he would like nothing betâ€" ter than to accompany the team as the manager. In years gone by â€" before he decided he would rather pursue a front office job rather than fellow opponents â€"â€" he would likely have been a shoeâ€"in to make the team. The triathlon, by the way, includes a swim, bike ride and jog, one right after the other. The standard combinaâ€" tion (and the one they‘re trying to get into the 2000 Olympic Games) has the distances split up at 1.5 km., 40 km. and 10 km., respectively. In 1991, he competed across Europe and recorded wins such as the muchâ€"publicized Iron Curtain Triathlon, the first race of its type to cross the Iron Curtain. In 1992, in what would be his final competitive seaâ€" son, he once again represented Canada at the world Gavin Maxwell won gold in the 1,000 metre, fourâ€" man canoe race; silver in the 1,000 metre, fourâ€"man canoe race; silver in the 1,000 metre canoe race; and The departure of Ireland has meant a fastâ€"track for 27â€" Coming into an organization "that for so many years yearâ€"old Jay Anderson, who last year was an assistant â€" has been so successful", he said, carries with it a chalâ€" coach for the rival Georgetown team. lenge that he looks forward to tackling. Former triathlion star By NORMAN NELSON Oakville Beaver Sports Editor Whatever the distances, Rydlo used be pretty profiâ€" cient in covering them. In 1990, he made Canada‘s junior national triathlon team and competed at the world chamâ€" pionships in Orlando where he finished 15th overall â€" but second highest among North Americans. The new Blades coach, on the other Jay Al hand, will have a considerable more disâ€" tance to travel to the arena, although he will be much closer to his own career goals. The hockey season isn‘t over â€" it‘s just beginning for next season. The Oakville Blades provincial junior A hockey team already has some major offâ€" season news that coach Greg Ireland, who guided the team to the division finals where they lost to the Hamilton Kilty Bees, is stepping down. General Manager Murray Walker termed the parting "very amicable" and said Ireland is moving on to coach Caledonia in the Metro Toronto Junior A loop. Six trips to medal podium raiser. (Photos by Peter McCusker) SPORTS Jay Anderson Martin Rydlo The Canadian team is in the midst of a 10â€"day trainâ€" ing camp in southern France in preparation for an allâ€" important regatta in Germany at the end of the month that will solidify the makeâ€"up of the Canadian team. The results virtually assures the two members of the Burloak Canoe Club a trip to this year‘s world champiâ€" onships in Mexico at the end of September, said Canoe Canada official Rob Sleeth. bronze in the 1,000 metre twoâ€"man canoe race Along the way they received recognition from Triathlon Canada and the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) and, even more importantly, sponsorship from two companies â€" a clothing company and a new health drink company. The national eastern qualifying event will be held Sun. July 3 in Guelph. Rydlo, meanwhile, will be busy trying to drum up sponsors and generate interest among the general public. He went back to Queen‘s University and promptly built the school‘s triathlon club from 23 to 90 members, making it one of the top clubs in Canada. He helped put together a fourâ€"event tour which attractâ€" ed more than a dozen universities. Along the way, he also heard how Canada had intendâ€" ed to pass on September‘s world university games, just as it had done two years earlier. Rydlo got together with some other past and present competitors at the beginning of the year, however, and the group decided to put together the team themselves. Anderson, who played for Georgetown back in 1988 when it was in the Junior B loop, said he is looking forward to taking over the reigns of a team after spending the last half decade as an understudy at the erson provincial junior A and university level. "It‘s a great opportunity," said Anderson. "I‘ve been paying my dues the last several years. This is my next step." cheques LLE BEAVER mb And that‘s something they feel he‘s done. This year, in fact, he was going going to make the move from Georgetown to Oakville, anyway, so he could "move along within our organization." Ireland‘s departure means he now comes in as head coach. The one thing they wanted him to do, however, was to "get more experience at this level," said Walker. He had actually put his hat in with the Blades for the previous coaching opening, and was "one of a few people shortlisted." With the relatively new sport of triathlon, however, being in the front office doesn‘t bring with it fancy desks or fat pay championships in Muskoka. His asthma acted up and his result â€" a 15th place finish in the 20 to 24 year old category â€" was not quite what he had hoped for. Abruptly â€" like Isiah Thomas who went from the court to the front office of the new Toronto Raptors National Basketball Association (NBA) team in the space of a few weeks â€" Rydlo also opted for a front office role. , JUNE 15, 1994 PAGE 14 The Hamilton Hurricanes football club is sponsoring both level two and level three courses on the June 25/26 weekend at Burlington‘s Nelson High School. The BMFA is sponsoring an entry level clinic (level one) in Oakville on Aug. 7. In both cases, interested participants should contact Football Ontario at (416) 495â€"4290. Oakville has a team in each of the leagues, including the Longhorns in mini tyke (6â€"8 years old) and Tyke (9/10 years old) and the Dolphins in atom (11/1% years old) and pee wee (13/14 years old). Exâ€"pro players Ron Southwick and Mike Stofalino are slated to coach th atom and pee wee teams, respectively, but more coaches are needed, said th league‘s tackle convenor Judith Mottram. Other international entries to watch out for, include: * underâ€"11 division: the Black Watch Royals from Tampa, Florida; and the Centreville Galazies from Spring Valley, Ohio; The team is a provincial champion and league winners, and Phil lafrate of the Oakville Soccer club said "we are hoping that Oakville‘s Italian community will come out and support this fine team." * underâ€"15 division: Centreville United from Dayton, Ohio; Reston Rampage from Reston, Virginia; and Southbury Trojans from Southbury, Connecticut; * underâ€"17 division: Upper Bucks Raiders from Telford, Pennsylvania. lafrate said this year‘s tournament "has the potential to be the best ever as the best teams from Ontario take on some outstanding international competition." The finals will be played at Sheridan College on Sun. July 3. For the first time in the 18â€"year history of the huge, 60â€"team Oakville International Friendship Soccer Tournament, teams will be coming from Italy and Trinidad. In the boys underâ€"13 division, Pol. San Faustino, from Modena, Italy has choâ€" sen Oakville over many American tournaments. In the boys underâ€"11 division, the Jean Lillywhite Soccer Lions, from Port of Spain, Trinidad will try out their skills against the best teams from Ontario. * underâ€"13 division: Bowie Bulls from Bowie, Maryland and the Tass Thistle Boys Club from Scotland; The Oakville boys underâ€"16 rep soccer team, enjoying home field advantage, advanced to the final eight in the Ontario Cup Playdowns with three convicing wins over the weekend. The other seven opponents in the quarterâ€"finals were determined in similar fashion over the weekend with eight groups of four teams squaring off. Oakville proved the class of their group, exhibiting superb attacking skills (23 goals) and solid defence and goaltending (one goal against) in three games. Here‘s a summary of the games: Oakville 6 (goals to Niki Budalich 2, Ed McMillan, David Pink, Pat Luciani and Brad Marray; assists to Budalich 2, McMillan 2 and Danny Galagher; shutout to Peter Eskitt and Manuel Larrabure), Woodbridge 0. Jdh VIIC JDOTLS LUIGC:S Longhorns win third straight He said the team has earned itself some breathing space atop the standings in the six team league (Oakville, Brampton, Scarborough, North ‘Bay, Sudbury and Toronto) â€" something that may prove useful later on. Oakville‘s bright lights included: Dan McAlonan who chalked up 80 yards on 13 carries, including one touchdown, and who also caught a seven yard pass; and Jamie Wootton who compiled 56 yards on four receptions. "it was a well balanced effort," he said. Demerling logged 119 yards in the air, making good on 10 of 19 passes. He threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions. A trio of Brampton quarterbacks managed 92 yards, only connecting on 12 of 29 passes. Oakville travels to Sudbury this Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. game and will be at home at Bronte Athletic Field the following week for a 7 p.m. game against Toronto. Velebit prove they belong Horvat said the team‘s early success is due, in part, to "a mixture of veterans (such as 32â€"yearâ€"old Jake Vrdoljak) and young players who are coming up (such as Matt Honchar and Mario Saric who suited up for the Oakville underâ€"19 rep socâ€" cer team last year)." The 10â€"team league includes Oakville, Barrie, Woodbridge, North York, Aurora, Bramalea, Scarborough, Brampton, Guelph and Peterborough (which was also promoted this year). Oakville opened its season with a 6â€"1 drubbing of Barrie City and now sports a record of one win and two ties in its first three games. Oakville‘s next home game is this Saturday (June 18), 7 p.m., at Bronte, against Aurora Hearts. Oakville team in final eight The world is coming to Oakyville For the first time since the Northern Football Conference (NFC) season began, the Oakville Longhorns didn‘t have to mount a comeback as they recorded a ver workmanlike 21â€"0 home field triumph over Brampton on Saturday. Oakville broke a scoreless game open with two touchdowns in the second quarter and added another insurance touchdown in the third quarter. In their first two games, the defending league champions had given up quick{ leads before storming back to defeat North Bay Bulldogs 31â€"9 and Scarborough Crimson Tide 28â€"21. The first and third touchdowns saw quarterback Mark Demerling connect with Craig Mitchell and Mike Dingsdale, respectively, while the other sixâ€"pointer came on a twoâ€"yard plunge by Dan McAlonan. Kicker Mike Jackson made good on all three conversions. The top four teams make the playoffs with the firstâ€"place team hosting the fourth, and second hosting third. line On the ground, Oakville generated 165 yards on 31 attempts while Brampton mustered 45 yards on 16 attempts. On Friday, Oakville couldn‘t protect a 2â€"1 lead but were still happy to drive back from Woodbridge with a 2â€"2 tie. "Woodbridge won the whole thing last year," said team official Joe Horvat. Goal scorers were Matt Honchar and Jason Gibson. On Sunday, with a couple of hundred fans looking on at Bronte Athletic Field, Oakville played North York to a 2â€"2 draw. Oakville opened the scoring and then allowed two North York goals before firâ€" ing in the equalizer early in the second half. Goal scorers were Jason Gibson and Stipe Curic. Oakville decided to move up to the top division this year after a playoff champiâ€" onship in their second tier division last year. Coach Tony Molnar admits he‘s pleased "for the moment â€" I‘ll take it one game at a time." Oakville Velebit soccer club are proving they belong in the Ontario Soccer League‘s top division as they fought two of the league‘s tougher teams to a draw over the weekend.
