"We‘re struggling to stay alive," says its president Audrey Wiebe. "And, the big difference between a nonâ€"profit singles club such as ourâ€" selves, and a commercial singles dance, is that we only allow singlesâ€"to join and come to our dances." "We are one of the few nonâ€"profit singles clubs left. All of the others are big commercial dances, open to all. Wiebe noted that "at least five new (commercial) singles clubs have opened up west of here in Burlington and Hamilton, and they are saying that the Oakville Singles Club has closed, and it hasn‘t." However, the Burlington Singles Club, a similar nonâ€"profit singles organization, closed a few months ago. "We (the nonâ€"profit clubs) have a lot of competition, and that‘s what we‘re fighting." Wiebe, a nineâ€"year member of the Oakville Singles Club, said up to seven years ago, attendance at its Friday night dances, with different DJs, at the Oakville Legion Hall, was running at a maximum of 300 people weekly.
