The Kensington retirement home took possession of its new luxury building â€" located directly beside its old one on Lakeshore Road â€" on Monday. As well as featuring one and twoâ€"bedroom suites, equipped with kitchenettes and a stateâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"art alarm system, the residence has an exercise room, a billiard room, a library, a beauty salon, a large communal dining room, and a small private dining "There is lots of space and a great view," said Berti, as she gazed excitedly around her fourthâ€" floor unit. "Now I feel I need lots more furniture." By KATY CLARK Special to the Beaver fter a year of scrutinizing Athe building of his new $18â€"million home, 72â€"yearâ€" old Eddie Audit is happy that he has finally moved in. "I watched the construction every minute," said Audit with a grin, who is still trying to orientate himself in the Kensington‘s new fiveâ€"storey residence. Like Audit, 85â€"yearâ€"old Rosie Berti is also delighted with her new accommodation. Four retail stores will be built in its place and a large garden will be planted on their roofs so the Kensington residents can walk outside. "It hasn‘t all been a bed of roses," said Sepa. "Our residents have a lot of mixed emotions." When construction started, each Kensington resident was given a hard hat and like Audit most of them watched the building grow daily. Although the new residence is far superior to the old, not all of the Kensington‘s 45 residents were happy to leave their old home. But with the help of their families, Sepa says, the residents are gradually settling into their new home. In 1982, the Royal Oak Hotel on Lakeshore Road was converted into a retirement home. Three years ago, International Care â€" a subsidiary of London Life â€" purchased the building with plans to knock it down. "The heating system was antiquated, and there was no air conditioning. It was just an old building," said Sepa.
