"I wasn‘t going to give up on my ‘Grammyâ€"Goâ€"Round,‘ " said the physiâ€" cally fit, adventuresome 49â€"yearâ€"old grandmother. The canoeist, having secured the free loan of a sea kayak from Hiker‘s Haven, began her trek late last week by kayakâ€" ing from Bronte Harbour to Sioux Lookout Park near Lakeshore and Burloak. From there, she‘s cycling around Burlington Bay, staying as close to the lake as possible, continuing through Niagara Falls to Lockport, N.Y. "‘The beautiful thing about cycling is that I don‘t need anybody following me, unlike kayaking in the lake. The cycling is something I can do completely on my own," said the independentlyâ€"minded mother of four, and grandmother of six. From there, Grant will kayak almost the full length of the Eric Canal to Oswego, almost 1/3 of her 12,000 kiloâ€" metre trek. "And, I won‘t need any boat cover going through the Eric Canal." She plans to finish the route on her loaned bicycle, crossing back into Ontario near Kingston, hoping to be back in Oakville to celebrate her 50th birthday on Sept. 29th The bicycle, a sixâ€"speed Raleigh touring bike, was loaned to her by Judy Collins of Harbour Craft in Bronte. A bike trailer, to carry stationary promotâ€" ing her trip, a tent, sleeping bag, clothâ€" ing, mobile telephone, and other supâ€" plies, is courtesy of The Cyclepath. "I hope people I meet along the way Other donations to her trip include a wet suit from Oakville Divers, a lifeâ€" jacket from Oakville Yacht Outfitters, and printing of promotional materials was done by Barkley Print Copy. In addition to raising funds for a Britishâ€" based international children‘s cancer charity, the trek is her way of saying thanks for having enjoyed good health, plus it being a novel way to mark her 50th year.
