And she noted that never in the ree years of Roller Blading all ver town as well as out to urlington, has she ever been asked o leave a store by a merchant or een other disruptive Roller laders. I made one serious strategic error in traveling with my brotherâ€"inâ€"law in that after I agreed to go, I...okay, make that two serious strategic errors. After I agreed to go, I put Danny in charge of the driving. As navigator, translator, and sightseeing guide, I was deeply disappointed in not being able to utilize my talents since, as the drivâ€" er, Danny did not stop except to sleep and even then, sometimes at the wheel. Besides, on the way into this lush and ancient villa on the banks of the meandering, azure River southeast to Africa and Moroceo, then we stopped because Danny felt that was enough for one day. For Danny, Europe was strictly a matter of speed and mileage. For me â€" not that I mind sitting in a car for 14 or 15 long, hot, sweaty hours at a time â€" it was a little tiring. Roaring north out of Lisbon, we passed through the picturesque mounâ€" tain village of Belem where I pointed out for Danny, the famed tomb of Portugal‘s greatest explorer, Vasco da Gama, who sailed from here in 1497 and returned in triumph having disâ€" covered the passage to India. So where is the vision and creâ€" ativity in just slapping fines on peoâ€" ple who are introducing such an environmentally benign form of transport? years ago. It showed vision and creâ€" ativity. Surely there is something else that can be done for those who wish to get from one side of the downâ€" town area to the other than eject them from the area. Tague, Danny had to "brush back some mulliac on a moped" who made the mistake of thinking his license plate gave him some kind of right to be on the same road as us. We‘d lost valuable time teaching him a lesson. We went to Seville â€" the heartbeat of Spain â€" with its mysterious winding alleys, secluded sunâ€"drenched patios, walks why then not provide more bike lanes or figure out some way of integrating it into the area? For myself, I am disappointed that we too will no longer able to have a pleasant way of getting home from school. This past spring, while the kids Roller Bladed along the wide downtown sidewalks, we‘d stop and shop of bread or proâ€" duce and chat with some of the merchants. No one, particularly the many I shouldn‘t say we never stopped. In Tangiers, Morocco, Danny purâ€" chased a leather bag, and he had nothâ€" ing but positive things to say about the efficiency of a marketing system that and the jasmineâ€"scented gardens. At least, that‘s what the guide book claimed. I didn‘t actually see any of this because we went to and through Seville like, as Danny likes to say, grain through a goose. We did Seville in less than 30 minutes and if it wasn‘t for "a bunch of noonâ€"hour geeks and gawkers", Danny feels we could have done much better. All I saw was a man with an overturned bread cart in my rearâ€"view mirror, shaking his fist at us near the Cathedral De Seville. I couldn‘t tell if Danny was referring to the upset breadâ€"seller or the great Gothic stainedâ€"glass windows surâ€" rounding the 184â€"footâ€"high Moorish minaret â€" but I remember him saying, "BEAUTYâ€"ful!" elderly people who smiled when they saw us meander slowly along, ever told us anything negative. In fact, we heard only positive comâ€" ments. Integration and diversity is what it‘s all about in a downtown area and the best ones have it all â€" the music, the people, the businesses and the different ways of getting around. And in the town of Meda, he stopped and introduced himself to a fellow of letters, a comrade in envelopes, a uniformed, helmeted Portuguese postie on a motor scooter. The guy was polite, even though his helmet appeared to bring an enormous amount of pressure on his ears and forehead. But he had little time for us. He explained to me that in Europe posties have to push on through their routes quickly so that they can be finâ€" ished and in the taverns by no later than one o‘clock in the afternoon. When I translated this to Danny, he said: BEAUTYâ€"ful!" I hope this account of my travels with Danny doesn‘t give you the wrong impression. I had a terrific series of essays â€" who speaks of the decline of city centres and the almost pervasive alienation in these areas. Near Badajoz, Spain, he stopped and took a photograph of an old man on a donkey, so he could "tell the inside guys I met Juan Valdez on my holidays." Limited options serve only to fragment and isolate. That‘s not what downtown living should be all about here or anywhere. We should do our best to embrace any other form of transport that gets us out of our allâ€"tooâ€"comfortable cars and makes our downtown cores diverse, vital, fully integrated places.
