But then Jelinek says he was hit with a curve ball out of left field â€" or more appropriately right field â€" from the right wing caucus of the Tory party who were seeking a leadership candidate to represent their views. When Jelinek scheduled the national press conference, everyone speculated it was to announce his canâ€" didacy for the party leadership. And at one point, the press conferâ€" ence was supposed to be the launchâ€" ing pad for his leadership campaign. But now, nearly nineâ€"months out of office, Jelinek says," I never had ambitions to lead the party or ever envisioned myself as Prime Minister." In addition, he received firm finanâ€" cial commitments from big and small businesses, and from the Atlantic provinces to British Columbia. "I started thinking about it very seriously," he admits. "For a three or four week period this thing was buildâ€" ing up. It was hot and heavy. I was ready to announce that I had more or less made up my mind I would run." I changed my mind and said ‘No, for my family‘s sake and our future I will not do it."
