Oakville Beaver Weekend, Sunday, July 31, 1994 â€" 22 All four vet Concorde members attended the threeâ€"day stage race in Sutton, Quebec with three riders finishing in the top ten. "They are experiâ€" enced, fast riders whose age only adds to their skill and tactical ability," said Jackson. The Oakville Cycling Club, however, will respond with plenty of skilled riders of its own. Here‘s a look at some of them: Greg Cavanagh: A 28â€"yearâ€"old New Zealand native, Cavanagh is a newcomer to the Oakville Cycling Club this year. Prior to moving to Canada in 1990, he rode on the New Zealand national B team and was ranked in the top ten in his home country. Although he took four years off from cycling while establishing his posiâ€" tion in Canada, it took but a few short months for him to move from categoâ€" ry three to category one, an indication of his talent and determination. Leigh Hargrove: only 17 years old, Hargrove already has four years racing experience behind her. This quiet, unassuming athlete is a fierce competitor and in the short time she has raced she has managed to win the Provincial Road and Time Trial Championships as well as the National Points Race Championships. In addition, she has won and placed highly in many local and international events. All of this while juggling school, friends and an intensive training program. "Watch for Leigh to win the Junior Girls event and keep your eyes open for her in the future," remarked Jackson. Julia Farell: an impressive rider who has attacked this year‘s racing schedule armed with an intensive winter training program. This has paid off with a bronze medal in the National Team Time Trial, a bronze in the criterium and a 12th place finish in the National Road Race. Racing in the USA against international fields, she has regularly finished in the top ten. A win in last weekend‘s Milano Criterium in Vaughan "makes Julia one of the favorites for today‘s race." Piers Davidge: although only 23 years old, he has many years of racing experience in Canada, the USA, Belgium and Holland. Over the years, he has accumulated five Ontario Gold Championships Medals, sixteen silver and bronze medals and has been a tenâ€"time member of Canadian and Ontario junior road track teams. Placings this year include: second at Woodstock; fifth at Electric City, USA; and sixth on GC Smenectedee stage race USA. He has also recorded three fourthâ€"place finishes and 20 topâ€"ten placings in Canada and the USA. "Piers is an excellent sprinter so watch for him to position himself for the sprint at the finish," advised Jackson. Jeff Wills: the 25â€"yearâ€"old rider brings a strong racing background to Oakville. His accomplishments include a firstâ€"place finish in the 1992 Windsor Classic, seventh in Ziggy‘s 1993 and numerous topâ€"ten finishes. His diversity is shown by a gold medal in the 1989 Ontario Mountain Bike (See ‘full day‘ page 23) These guys sure know how to cool down on a hot summer day.
