The trip went a little faster than anticipated. "The water level was high, the rapids were almost covered, making it a little faster . .. easier" â€"and wetter. "One canoe got swamped, completely filled with water. Another group coming down the river had at least one canoe tip almost every day." rapids and falls, organized through Camp Queen Elizabeth‘s leadership proâ€" gram run by the London YMCAâ€" YWCA. It was part of her leadership training. The adventure was a pilot program dubbed ‘Missinaibi ‘94.‘ The group camped along the river, carrying their supplies with them on seven canoes. And because of a stronger current, thanks to at least an hour‘s rainâ€" fall each day, the group reached Moosonee two days early. The trip included 10 portages around waterfalls. Canoes and supplies were carried "on our backs. We had one really tough portage." call 1â€"800â€"438â€"8861. _ PBRA 0 1994 Poaint1, inc The campers, who began their trek on July 2nd, would get up between 6 and 7 a.m., spend about 1 1/2 hours "getting out of our campsite," to began their paddle down river. Lunch was eaten on the river. "We would float down river as we ate." They would reach their next camp between 2 and 3 p.m., set up for the night, and spend the extra time swimming. A typical day on the Missinaibi conâ€" sisted of paddling 30 kilometres, and keeping and eye open for a "good campâ€" site." The group saw moose, a yearâ€"old bear cub (which was later shot at a campsite near Moosonee as it was deemed a ‘nuisance bear‘), bald eagles, beaver, and osprey. "I paddled with a different person each day," continued Emily. "That way we got to know everybody in our group." They had only met briefly before at trip meetings. Canoeing through the first set of rapids. "Everybody got along great, and it was so important that everyone did because of the teamwork this trip required." The campers each took two turns at being "leader for the day," which meant they were responsible for waking up the others, carrying the map, and finding the next campsite. The weather was unpredictable â€" a mixture of warm sunshine and cool overcast skies, plus the daily rainfall. Enroute, Emily celebrated her 16th birthday, on July 16th, "The others woke me up, singing Happy Birthday. The trip was somewhat of a culture shock, the Missinaibi being a wilderness river, one of Canada‘s remaining unspoiled historic trade routes, with only four bridges â€" two road and two railway â€" spanning its width, and the remains of only five trading posts. It was a major trading route for the Hudson‘s Bay Company. They met Cree Indians along the way. "It was strange being away from the real world as I know it, not seeing any buildings or power lines," concluded Emily. She returned to base camp, on Beausoleil Island near Honey Harbour, on Aug. 7th to meet her parents, Glenn and Carol Cooper. Emily has, through friends of her parents, been involved with Camp Queen Elizabeth for six years, and has canoed in Tamagami. She learned about ‘Missinaibi ‘94" in her camp registration kit, and was pleased to have been selected. 1661 Bayview Avenue (In Leaside) , (416) 4802221 Need it or not. What you see is what you get.
